Rivers Election And Our Deteriorating Electoral Process. by Nobody: 8:53am On Mar 20, 2016
Rivers State has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. Since the former governor of the state, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, fell out with his former friend and current governor or the state, Barr Nyesom Wike, the state has known no peace. The elections held in the state during the last general elections were one of the bloodiest in the country. The situation in Rivers state is not helped by the preponderant presence of militants whom many politicians rely on to win elections. This practice, it must be said, outdates the current political gladiators. With the rerun Senatorial, National Assembly, and House of Assembly elections ordered by the Court of Appeal, the enmity between the two further became exacerbated. This has led to the streets of Rivers state being washed in blood. The buildup to the elections was characterized by violence and hate speeches. The political atmosphere was made toxic with vitriols being hurl at one another. So, it didn't come as a surprise to see the gale of violence that has swept through and continue to sweep through the state. What is shocking in all of this is the helplessness of security agencies. Despite the fact that the Police Headquarters literally shifted base and moved to Rivers state and the complementary role of other sister security agencies, the mayhem that greeted the elections was still unsettling. The ubiquitous presence of police officers and military men didn't deter some unscrupulous youths from unleashing violence on their own people. This then raises the question of our political culture- our understanding of politics and the role of a credible electoral process. It appears we see democracy differently from those we copied it from. Former president Jonathan laid the foundation of a credible electoral process; Prof Jega did what we thought was impossible. Rather than build on this, we have gone back to the dog eat dog days. It is a shame of a nation and the failings of all of us. Democracy only thrive when the will of the people is made supreme. We must all rise up and condemn evil.

This same scenerio played out last year when GEJ and Jega were still in control so let's stop the "pontification"

Prior to the election last year many people were maimed and killed from both sides of the divide, during the election the same thing, after the election the same thing, then the superem court judgement the same thing

I am not putting the blame on any of the parties involved. It is just an outright condemnation of our cut-throat politics and the apparent helplessness of the electorate.

Until Nigerians tell themselves the truth and demand responsibility from leaders, we will continue being in the dark ages.

Question: What is Amaechi a serving minister of transportation in the Federal Republic of Nigeria doing in Rivers state? Is he there for assessment of the monorail project he used to siphon Rivers state monies? It's very obvious he is there for just one purpose which is to heat up the polity and how does that benefit the average Nigerian that ply the death traps we call roads everyday.

Is this the change?? PDP was replaced with APC by the electorate because of some of these perceived excesses and insensitivity and the APC led government is doing just the same thing.

Until we stop being deceived by propaganda and partisan politics that doesn't even affect us positively and demand true leadership, the political elites will continue to take us for a bumpy ride in this country.

Amaechi, as an indigene of Rivers state, has the right to visit the state and to vote and be voted for. I just heard it on Channels Telvesion that election in two additional local governments has been cancelled. This makes it eight local governments where such decision have been taken. I just wonder how much it will cost the nation in resources to conduct another election in those local governments with the attendant violence that we have seen so far.
