Abayomi Shogunle, the head, Complaint Response Unit (CRU),
Nigeria Police at social media week Lagos

Speaking at the Social Media Week Day 4 event tagged: ‘Let’s
Talk Governance! Citizens, Government and Technology’, on
Thursday, February 25, hosted by EiE and Strengthening
Advocacy and Civic Engagement (SACE), Shogunle said there
was a need to make the police accountable to the public,
adding that the need to resolve complaints was the reason why
the complaint service was launched.

Read the interview below:

In the first 100 days of setting up CRU, how many cases were
you able to resolve and how quickly were you able to resolve
them?

The CRU in its first 100 days received 1,946 reports. We were
able to resolve 1,522 cases which have been closed.

After investigation we also discovered that 133 cases are false
because the information provided was not correct. We have at
the moment 291 pending cases, which is a spill over from the
first 100 days that we are still looking into.

Are there any plans in place on training police officers on
human and public relations?

Training of police officers on human and public relations is
ongoing. It is the belief of the police leadership that every
single officer is a public relations officer of the Nigerian police
and every single policeman is a representation of the image of
the Nigerian police force where individuals conduct in the
public.

The training is already included in basic training institutions
and the force is also doing more in partnership with
development partners.

How does social media in general help your work?

The social media not only in Nigeria around the world is
developing into another community. It is developing into what I
would call a suburb. There are streets, towns on the social
media platform and the Nigeria police force has to get on
board to know what is happening and also to engage and
communicate with members of the public using that same
platform.

So to a great extent the social media is helping the work of the
Nigerian police. For instance in the first 100 days of the CRU
we received 160 distress call from social media. It is also
helps in solving crimes and getting the attention of the Nigerian
police force in things that the force should actually be
interested in the happenings in the society.

How active are you on social media?

We have first line agents who monitor all these platforms.
Automated reply is generated specifically to respond to the
comment you’re getting.
I just want to urge Nigerians that when sending a message be
detailed make sure you include the date, time and place of the
incident.

The CRU was launched on November 13, 2015 by the Inspector
General of Police, Solomon Arase.

CRU is a community-based reporting mechanism where
members of the public can report their complaints and queries
about policing activities and solutions are provided and the
complaints are resolved in real terms.

Members of the public can reach out to the CRU via ‘WhatsApp’
