By MRS scan machines I guess he means MRI Scan... anybody who cant read those has himself to blame, stop bringing down doctors in nigeria, the ones abroad moved from here. Radiologists will be particularly insulted by that comment... here they are discussing the brain drain and someone is talking about sending images taken in nigeria to america... unserious dolts
you see why lots of Nigerian doctors are unhappy at home, total disregard and disrespect especially from those who should know better. I don't think the system actually cares about the brain drain, as long as it doesn't affect the policy makers directly

You have to understand the extent of the problem to be objective. First, how many qualified radiologist do we have in Nigeria? Remember, it takes additional 4 to 5 years after medical school to become a radiologist. The last time I checked there were just about 180 of them in Nigeria. That is approximately 6 radiologist for each state. In other words, 1 radiologist for 1million people, considering that they are about 170 million people in Nigeria. Compare this with the number of radiology procedures that are performed each day in Nigeria. From plain film xray, ultrasound, CT, MRI and Mammograms, these procedures are done in hundreds every day in Nigeria.

The question now is, who are the people reading those images to make accurate diagnoses? Since doctors in other specialties are not qualified to read this images accurately, these overwhelming numbers of images have to be read by someone, that is where those abroad are needed. If that gap is not filled by qualified radiologist elsewhere, patients will suffer and quackery will ensue.

Technology has made it possible for imaging exam to be done in Nigeria and transmitted abroad for results. It is called Teleradiography. Just like sending ordinary photographs over the internet to someone outside of Nigeria. But this is done with more sophisticated, secured softwares. One example of it is PACS (Pictural Archiving Computer System), it is a vendor reoriented enterprise. With cloud computing gaining grounds, we may begin to see other non-vendor systems.

Radiologist in Nigeria can only do what they have the resources and time to do. In India and other Asian countries, there are companies whose primary operation is medical Image solutions. They have under their employment, radiologists who read images for partner companies on "pay as you read" bases. Nigerians would have benefited from such but because of poor infrastructure; electricity and internet- they are constrained The world is fast changing and Nigeria can not afford to be left far behind. A lot of people these days work from remote sites, thanks to technology and the medical profession can not be an exception.

But our lawless MDs who are demigods in their eyes will feel threatened. Only the up and coming ones would be eager for those guys to return to help lift their skills up.

Nigerians are the best medical brains in the US. Albeit, our local medical professionals are also proficient but they lack the modern and palatable facilities for utilization and further vocational exercises.

Its time our govt consolidate on this vantage for consummate exploitation by working to provide incentive mechanisms that will motivate then to relocate back home with their auxiliary miscellaneous technologies that will aid and easy their medical processes by providing enabling environments for fascinating remunerations, exemption from tarrif and import duties remittance aiming at rebating the exorbitant cost of establishing and maintaining medical institutions.

We need our profound medical erudites back.

I am a Wailer, and I Wail for the Growth and Development of our dear Nation Nigeria!
Our Posterity Should Not Inherit An Impoverish And Under-Developed Country!!.
They actually want us to do sacrificial service here. Lol!

I love my country and will consider sacrificial service here(with post-graduate training in better equipped places)

But asking sacrifice from the ordinary man (who studies in ill-equipped environments for at least six years only to come out and be fighting to maintain his role in the system because other health care professionals are struggling to usurp his position due to greed and feelings of inferiority, who has to improvise due to numerous strikes and lack of suitable infracture) and you're wasting your time.

We'd better sit down and try to make things work. My guys are already prepping for the USMLE.

They doctors in diaspora should visit hospitals in their proposed choice area of relocation and give the government details of modern medical equipment lacking and advise them on how they can acquire such.

Or they could understudy the methods of the doctors who are currently working in Nigeria also, in order to find out how to best fit into the Nigerian environment.

I'm not a radiologist... but I during my school days and residency training as a surgeon, I have been thought to read my ct scan and mri images myself then seek further review from radiologists, their initial report notwithstanding. I'm not against outsourcing, or seeking other opinion because someone can see something else you didnt initially notice. Even in nigerian, people send images within via media to radiologists and outside. What I hate are demeaning stupid comments from people who know nothing about anything... saying no one can read mri is stupid and ill thought

That dream is dead. It is not worth the trouble. I have medical pieces of equipment including EKG machines, ultrasound machines, ABG machines, BACTEC, etc packed in a warehouse in Lagos. I killed that dream of venturing into the murky water of healthcare in Nigeria. I will definitely auction off the machines and move on. I can't live in Nigeria neither can one comfortably rely on a manager. So why bother. Even if the conditions are met, none of the doctors are moving back to Nigeria.

Bro, Hold that thought.Thats a lot you are about to throw away.
Why not relocate your biz to another location with specific customer target in mind?.Seriously thats a lot of money in properties you are leaving there lying fallow.

My brother, you have given a valid statement however where theres a will, theres always a way.Imagine today how many diagnostic laboratories that can handle scope procedures we have in Lagos state alone ( besides hospitals and clinics that could handle such).

What would be wrong if Radiology as a specific and specialists course is encouraged and accredited with mordern tech. for training?.

Bros, the problem is rooted in Nigeria factor; lack of infrastructure, inadequate maintenance culture, corruption and poor political will-power. Nigeria is not yet an advanced country and the economics of health care is still emerging.

First, let me address the issue of training that you raised. There are several universities in Nigeria that offer Clinical Radiology Science for example, UNILAG, UNICAL, UNN, ABU etc. However, more schools are needed because currently, there are less than 3000 registered Radiographers in Nigeria. That is less than 100 personnel for each state. For a state with 30 LGA that would be 3 personnel for each LGA.

Another area to point out is the dynamic and diverse nature of Clinical Radiology. Because of advancement in biomedical sciences, there have been numerous types of diagnostic imaging techniques. It is practically impossible for one individual imaging scientist to master all of them. Space and time will not permit to list everyone of them, but here are some examples and instance of their application. 1) X-ray for bones, Ultrasound for Obgyn, Ecohcardiogram for heart, Radiotherapy for cancer, Dosimetery for dose calculation and application, Nuclear medicine for radiopharmaceutical procedures, molecular imaging for molecule in the body, Ct Scan for cross sectional areas of the body, MRI for different planes of the body and good for soft tissues, Mammogram for breast, Positron Emission Tomography (PET) for internal organs, Cardio Radiography for xray of the heart, Vascular Imaging for blood vessels, Cath Lab for catherization and balloon placement, holster placement and stunt placement, Muscular skeletal imaging for Muscles and their skeletons, Cardio MRI for MRI of the heart, Fluoroscopy for live X-ray visualization, EKG, Bone densitry for bone density etc.

There reason I took the time to list some of these procedures is for us to see that Nigeria has a lot of work to do in order to be able to catch up with the rest of the world. What do you think is the feat of someone who need some of these procedures in Nigeria? You guess is as good as mine. Training and retraining of qualified individuals is highly important. But even when people are trained in these areas, they prefer not to come back because of the incentives abroad. Recently it was in the new that the only CATH LAB in Lagos commissioned by Fashola is not functional because of lack of man power.

That brings us to job security. What plans do they have to sustain the existing facilities. When equipment need repairs, are they willing to do so in timely manner or will they be abandoned? These modern medical equipment need constant updates, troubleshooting and maintenance. I follow some of these news since I have interest in the area; recently, a radiotherapy equipment a- Colbat 60- which by the way is meant to be in the museums, was repaired at the cost of #10M in one of the teaching hospitals after being abandoned for more than 10 years! Lets be frank to ourselves, if a radiotherapist had returned from abroad to work in such environment, what would he do in that 10 years of downtime? This is an example of the frustration folks abroad are avoiding.

The other area is affordable health care. Quality care cost money and most people are not able to pay out of pocket for these services, therefore Health Insurance becomes necessary. Until there is a form of Universal Health Insurance policy in Nigeria- not the NIHS we have now, majority will not be able to access quality health care services. I dream of a health care system in Nigeria were market women, bus conductors and driver, brick layers, fisher men and farmers, small business owners, teachers, pregnant women, people with disability and children below the age of 21 can afford to use any health facility and doctors of their choice when they are sick.

The gap between the rich and the poor in getting health services is too wide in Nigeria. The CHANGE they are talking about must be seen in the health care system. Health disparity must be addressed, so that Nigeria can take it rightful place as the giant of African.
