Aliko Dangote: The richest man in Africa believes there are three major problems facing this Country. They are:

Unemployment: Speaking on unemployment, Dangote said: “It is a great and pervasive problem in Nigeria. But the point must be made that it is not peculiarly a Nigerian problem. All over the world, there are growing issues of unemployment. And what we are saying is that the in-coming government can achieve a remarkable success in this regard if it declares an emergency on unemployment and tackle it decisively. You know the organised private sector will or should play a key role in this. And that is why we are concerned.”

Increased power generation: The businessman called on Buhari’s administration to revisit the ongoing privatisation programme in the energy sector with a view to growing the energy capacity of the country.

Corruption: He further lamented the extent of damage corruption has done to Nigerian economy, describing it as a “big cankerworm that has really eaten deep into the fabric of our nation.” “The malaise of corruption is a threat to the survival of the Nigeria economy, no doubt. We must all therefore rise in unison to tackle the menace both in the public and private sector of the economy. The Buhari-led government can show a lot of strength on this issue by showing direction, by demonstrating commitment to ridding every sector of the economy of this malaise.

Vice President of Nigeria, Yemi Osinbajo.

The current Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria believes Nigeria is suffering from two ailments which if tackled will position Nigeria for greatness. They are: Religion and Ethnicity.

He said leaders in various facets of the country play politics with everything, including religion and tribe.

The vice president noted that Nigeria has for long been divided along religious and ethnic lines.

“A nation that is divided against itself is like a kingdom divided against itself, which the Bible says, shall remain desolate,” Mr. Osinbajo, a pastor and law professor, stated.

Lets now hear you:

So many theories cum mysteries as it regards Nigeria's problems and how to move the country to the promise land. Can we on this thread carefully identify these problems and possible/practical ways around them.

1. The structure of the country. we need to practice true federalism/regionalism to stimulate competition amongst the regions instead of this present rent system.

2. Corruption of our leaders and citizens as a whole. This is a major problem, everyone seem to have this idea that they can achieve success or survival by being corrupt wherever they find themselves and it now frustrate those that are actually not corrupt and want to do the rights things everytime.

All of Nigeria's problem can be traced to one root cause and that is

Bad leadership - exterminate all the crooks.

Terrible infrastructure is also another big challenge and it is product of bad leadership - fix Electricity for example and watch things fall in place

I beliv d 3 i mentioned summarizes all except right infringement.
Lemme explain..... Unemployment leads to poverty wish inturn leads to slavery of d mind, and willingness to do anything 4 moni(including political thugery)..... Unemployment wish is d main cause of poverty prevents d poor from getting proper education and exposure thus keeping his/her foolish and a ready made tool 4 d elites(political class)............. Morale Collapse; d average Nigeria does not see cheating, bribing, embezzlement as something dat is wrong but he/she sees it as a smart tin to do and wud malign anyone who tries 2 be just............ On d oda hand godfatherism is only possible because 1. d unemployed poor man needs scrubs from d table of d godfather, 2. d morale drained mind wud be loyal to anybody just 4 his/her selfish interest 3. Tribalism /religious fanatism leads 2 blind followership(Godfatherism) and finally maternal and infact motality is just a symptom and not part of d problem

Nigerians are the ones holding the nation back.

Just reading through comments in this section reveals how ignorant a lot of the followership are.

They'll protect their oppressors at all cost. Some even lay down their lives for them.

Re: In Your Opinion: What Are the Major Problems stunting Nigeria's Development by trillville(m): 6:46am On Mar 26, 2016
We have many major issues in Nigeria: reliance on oil revenue rather than taxes, an over bloated government, that is both civil service and public service have too many staff who contribute nothing to the system but consumption.

A democratic government's goal should be to benefit majority of its people and not a small group of its people. Government can choose to use its income either on recurrent expenditure (paying staff) which will lead to increased spending on consumer goods which are mostly imported or on capital expenditure (building infrastructure such as power plants, refineries, telecommunications, etc), that will in turn spur foreign direct investments into a country. Obviously, Nigeria partakes in the former.

Because the government doesn't improve the lives of the majority of its citizens, it has no right to demand higher taxes from its citizens. Citizens reason that if their collective oil wealth is used only for a chosen few, why should they contribute more money for this chosen group who do nothing beneficial. This creates a cyclical problem of government lacking funds for development and forces the government to seek funding from the private sector (mostly stolen money or money derived from one sharp practice or the other). The private sector then provides mediocre services at exorbitant prices to the citizens further worsening the citizen's lives.

SOLUTION
government must conduct thorough analysis of each of its MDAs to ascertain whether an MDA should remain operational. In MDAs deemed fit for survival, government must conduct analysis on each worker and each role, to ascertain job functions for each worker and to set measurable achievements for each role.
This will lead to mass layoff in the civil service. Government will have to pay large sums of money to its sacked staff, and would also increase unemployment in the short run. On the positive end, government will be able to build infrastructure such as power plants, roads and bridges, and irrigation systems, spurring private sector growth, thus massively reducing unemployment in the long term. Government will also be able to justify increases in taxes and the citizens will feel obligated to pay such taxes. Currently, Nigeria has the lowest VAT rate in the west African region.

In the 70's, My father got a lecturing job and was given a three bedroom flat at the youthful age of 25. such a situation is unimaginable today. We complain about poor roads and bad electricity, yet things are not getting any better by the day. Maybe 25 years from now, we would look back at this period as the glorious days. I truly hope we get things right but I seriously have my doubts that we will.

PS.
This is not a capitalism vs socialism argument, this is an argument for common sense.
