Opposition Lawmakers In Oyo Set To Defect by naijatoday: 5:23am On Jul 26, 2009 |
IN the next couple of weeks, some members of the opposition in the Oyo State House of Assembly are set to defect to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Sunday Tribune reliably gathered from some members of the opposition camp in the House that the recent cut in the salaries and allowances of the elected public officers as announced by the Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has begun to take its toll on the living standards of some elected political officers. To remain afloat, most of them have now resorted to joining the ruling party in the state as the only way out of the financial crisis. Sunday Tribune recently gathered that those worst hit by the new order are members of the legislative arm of government who do not belong to the same political party as the state governor. Sunday Tribune over the weekend ran into a member of the state house of assembly at one of the finance houses withdrawing the sum of N3,000 from the ATM machine and when questioned on why he had to belabour himself with the withdrawal of such a token, he confided in Sunday Tribune that “the recent cut in the allowances of elected public officials has left us with little or nothing for us to take care of ourselves, immediate family members and our supporters back in our constituency.” According to the lawmaker, who is one of the Principal Officers in the House, “even before the reduction in our take home package, we were finding it difficult making ends meet, but the situation has been further worsened by the cut in our allowances which was not even enough in the first place.” It was also gathered from the lawmaker that because of this, most opposition members in the House have concluded plans to dump their party for the PDP as a way out of the financial crunch. The ruling party, it was learnt, is capitalising on the situation to draw more members of the House to its fold. Sunday Tribune gathered from one of the opposition members of the House that “the financial meltdown we are going through is only peculiar to us in the opposition. Members of the ruling party in the House are getting one patronge or the other as a way of cushioning the effect of the downward trend in their finance. Whether we like it or not, some of us who have no principle and political base will accept the carrot being dangled by the PDP and dump our party. But the few of us with political conscience and fear of God will continue to perservere in the face of this hardship.” When contacted, the state secretary of the PDP, Alhaji Bashir Akanbi told Sunday Tribune that “there is nothing like dangling of carrot before opposition lawmakers. The constitution of this country guarantees freedom of association and if any of the lawmakers in the House has concluded plans to join the PDP without being induced, so be it. They must have done that due to their conviction that the PDP remains the only political party that can deliver democracy dividends to the people of the state.” It will be recalled that at the presentation of his score-card in the last one year to members of the House, Hon. Afiz Jimoh of the Labour Party formaly joined the PDP. The House of Assembly, few months later, inched towards a one party house with the defection to the PDP of five ANPP members of the State House of Assembly and the former Deputy National Chairman of the All Nigeria peoples Party (ANPP) Alhaji Amidu Ajibade. Accordng to the ANPP leader and deputy Chief Whip, Hon. Nafiu Baale Lamidi, “anybody that is in the ANPP today is in bondage. We were the ones that made the party exist. Now that we have decided to leave, there is nothing there again. The party as it were has lost focus and because we are driven with the urge to have democracy dividends back home which the governor and the PDP stand for, we are happier and fulfilled in the PDP.” http://www.tribune.com.ng/26072009/news/news7.html To me their defection is not a problem, but the reason for their defection. |

Yeah and that is the reason we can never move forward as a nation. When strange bed fellows sleep together, what kind of leadership do we expect apart from mediocrity. Also, the notion that becoming an ordinary councilor automatically brings wealth is destroying us as a people. It is so sad and I pray that one day we will have parties formed as a result if strong ideologies and not the comedic parties we have in Nigeria. That is only when we are ready to move. |

This problem will not be solved by moaning about it in all parts of the world politicians defect the opposition should present a united front, go to the court to interprete whether people can defect without loosing office. do we vote for parties? or do we vote for individuals? changing political allegiance is not a criminal offence what we need to explore are the implications which are not very clear in Nigeria. the status quo can not continue. Supreme court can not continue case by case as they deem fit, they should tell us what the general rule is. |

The constitution states that any lawmaker who defects to another political party before the end of his tenure, automatically loses his seat. . . . so lets see how this illegality pans out!!! |

Will Nigeria ever change with these kind of people in our parliamentary house? Imagine those that were nothing before being elected now claiming they want to defect to a ruling thieving party because of cut in their salaries. Are these lawmakers indeed? Emperoh: And what happens to a governor that defect to another party? |
