We are all aware that Nigeria's President Buhari is in the USA for a nuclear summit, this is despite the fact that Nigeria do not develop uranium or posses nuclear plants. Surprisingly countries like Russia, Iran but to name a few are not attending this summit.

Let us assume that Nigeria intends building nuclear plants in the near future to improve our electricity challenges, how ready are we? We hear the government complain of sabotage on gas pipelines which disrupts power supply, if those pipelines can not be secured, how much ready are they to secure these nuclear plants? Uranium have a half life of over a 100yrs, any sabotage can be catastrophic.

Nigeria is currently unstable, what if the uranium gets in the wrong hands and they are "weaponized"? Will America and other world powers give us the go ahead to develop uranium considering our volatile society?

How then do Buhari attending this summit benefits Nigeria? Lets discuss and educate ourselves.

Let's start by discussing what Nigeria benefited by Goodluck Jonathan's participation in the same summit during his tenure.

This is not a Jonathan vs. Buhari thread. I believe in 2010 we also discussed the pros n cons.

My take. A community that hosts nuclear plant would definitely not touch such plant with 1billion km long rod not to talk of "destroying" it just to get back at the government for whatever nonsense reason such as; our son or adopted son has been booted out of power, Tompolo is our mentor cum ATM etc.

They quite know such a community would be wiped out of existence in no time. I think apart from hydro, nuclear is another best source of electricity generation. Thermal has been proved to be easily employed by the terrorists in Niger Deltans to get back at the government. Let's station a power plant in Anambra forest and see if those terorists would not behave. Heheheh.

This is very simple. 2 nuclear plants should be built in Nigeria. 1 should be built in the Niger Delta (Preferably Bayelsa). The other 1 should be built in the south-East (preferably Enugu).

Now, if any of the Ipob touts or Niger Delta militants decide to sabotage any of these nuclear plants. Yes - you guessed right! grin

A horror film would be produced in Nollywood, titled “Radioactive Contamination: Inviting death from a nuclear reactor” grin

Lagos shares boundary with the atlantic ocean, it is the most populated state in Nigeria with the most need for electricity to power the huge commercial and industrial area. Siting a nuclear plant in badagary is a win win.

While it is true that nuclear plants are built along coastlines because they're highly water-intensive; I still maintain that the nuclear plants should be sited in Bayelsa & Enugu respectively for security reasons. grin

You want nuclear plants sited in Badagry so that the militants, boko haram & Igbos can come hit it with bazooka, thereby resulting in the death of the entire inhabitants (including plants & animals) of Lagos & environs through radioactive contamination? Guy, think of another thing. grin

On the contrary, Lagos have demonstrated maturity in handling security issue hence militancy or religious extremism have not been able to thrive, also we have the highly sophisticated and educated people to man the station, imagine the employment and revenue potential. Lagos stands head and shoulder above others in term of location for such a strategic project.

I think the nuclear plants should be located in the far far north. They need electricity a lot there and I hear we have some uranium deposits in the north east. grin grin cheesy

Lagos is constrained in terms of land mass. You need a large expanse of land to build a nuclear station.
The Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant which is the world's largest plant by capacity on 1, 038 acres. Don't think we have that luxury in Lagos. Ondo or Ogun Waterside LGA would be a viable option.

FG has picked Kogi and Akwa ibom state.

It is easiest to generate large MW of electricity using the nuclear way than any other , however, it is the most risky.

I suggest we get it done at the moment while we are grappling with power shortages, and plan to decommission within 10-15 years after operation starts, hopefully by then we would as a nation have commissioned other means of power generation that can meet /exceed the nations electric power needs

The world's largest nuclear station generates about 7,965 MW. If we can build two of about 3000 MW each we would be on the road to redemption.
