2. 4 x 200AH Premium Deep Cycle Batteries.

3. 8 x 250W Mono-crystalline Solar Panels.

4. 48V, 50A Charge Controller.

LOAD:
Sufficient to power the basic needs of a 4 bedroom home for up to 24 hours.

Enough energy to power all household loads including a Water Pumping
Machine and Pressing Iron and 1HP AC.

Please you may require more information to inform a decision on the plans above.

Thanks for the info. pls if you are to provide all these, how much will it cost me? Pls again will I need NEPA after I install this in my house. I don't want anything to with nepa and their crazy bills on darkness.

1. I need to see the voltage and charge current (amperage) of the solar panel as shown in the attached picture.
2. You can load the output of the charge controller, but remember that, the output of the charge controller is only Direct Current (VDC).

thanks for the response. unfortunately i carelessly did not take a picture and it has now been installed on the roof.

i know it is 250W. on my solar controller when the sun is bright i have seen charge current as high as 11a.

what If i connect the output of to my inverter using a 2 output switch ?

I have a 250W solar panel specification image attached to this post. Your specification should be within that range.

Since your inverter is 24V, your panels should have been connected in parallel thereby increasing your resultant charge current by a factor of 4.

There are factors that may be responsible for your low charge current of 11A at peak period.

a. The size of the cable that you used in connecting the solar panels to the charge controller. This must be a flex DC cable and should be at least 6mm. 10mm is better. The same size of cable that you used in connecting from the panels to the charge controller should be the same that is used to connect from the charge controller to the batteries terminals.
b. The orientation of your solar panels. The panels should directly face the sun at about 1:30pm.
c. Connecting the panels properly ie the panels should be connected in parallel in this case to have a higher charge current (amperage)

Great post here. I recently got 4 250w mono panels for my 24V, 1500VA inverter with 4 160ah batteries pics attached.
1. Hw long will it take to get a full charge
2. Can I connect anything to the load output on the controller

I used 16mm flex cables all through. and the panels are flat on my roof. what is the ideal charge current for my type of installation.
Thanks for the responses

a. Were the panels connected in series or parallel?
b. Did you use PWM or MPPT solar charge controller?
c. What is the voltage from the solar panels?

SolnergyPower:
It is usually written on the body of the inverter. Though you can also find it in the displayed parameters in the inverter if your inverter has a display screen.

Maximum current charge is 50A on the inverter and the charge controller is also 50A.

About increasing the panel:
Can two different wattage be used at same time in parallel.
Example: 150w and 250w
250w and 200w

Can mono and poly panels be used together as well.
Re: How To Install Solar Panels & Inverter For Home-step By Step Guide by SolnergyPower: 9:48pm On Apr 19, 2017
That means the inverter can have up to 50A from the solar charge controller.

You can combine solar panels but the resultant wattage, voltage and amperage will be that of the solar panel with lesser value.

You can use Monocrystalline and Polycrystalline solar panels together but you optimize them, please use an MPPT solar charge controller.

Okay.
Are you advising I change from pmw to Mppt?

Do I necessarily need to ground/ earth my connection? If need be, the negative terminal goes the ground right? Or to earth the frame of the solar panel, inverter and then to the ground.

@SolnergyPower
Solar Panel Specification

Wattage: 200W
Voltage: 36.6V
Charge Current: 5.46A

When you connect your two solar panels in parallel, you will have

Voltage: 36.6V. The Solar Charge Controller will take only 24V from here....
Charge Current: 10.94A (5.46A x 2)

[/quote]

I so much admire your patience with DIY.

Kindly help my understanding here...
Assuming the panels are working effectively; With the two panels in parallel now, am I to see 10.94A displayed on charge controller as calculated above or I will only see 5.46A displayed and assumed 10.94A is been delivered. (I tested the panels separately and both are working well).

Thank you.
Re: How To Install Solar Panels & Inverter For Home-step By Step Guide by SolnergyPower: 11:45am On Apr 22, 2017
You'll have 10.94A ideally but you may experience losses up to 30% or so.

Remember, you'll have that optimal value at when the sun is most intense and directly focused on your solar panels.

MPPT is more efficient though equally more expensive. When combining solar panels of different specifications, MPPT is the way to go.

Oga, DO NOT GROUND YOUR NEGATIVE TERMINAL!!!

Inverters have earthing connection, look for it and hook it to the earth of your house.

As for the panels, if your house has been properly earthed, you don't need to bother but if the panels are installed using frames, you need to buy earthing materials to earth the panels.

@Pelumi

Do you repair both pure and modified sine wave inverter? I have both to repair, although in Lagos now, but can take it along when next I am in Ibadan.

perloomey:

250w solar panel is not enough to charge a 200ah adequately
let's do some mathematics
a battery is 12v 200ah= 2400wh
the battery can only give u 80% of it's life span which is 80% of 2400=1920wh
in Ibadan we've 4hours of good sun
so divide 1920/4= 480w
if u use 250w it will take close to 8hrs to charge a battery full

Great information
SolnergyPower:
This is the order. Solar Panels >>>Batteries>>>Inverter. So inverters do not depend on solar panels. Rather, batteries do.

Solar Panel Charge Calculation
Power = Current x Voltage. Energy = Power x Time. So your 12V battery of 150Ah needs 1800Wh of energy (12 x 150). So a 25W PV panel would need 72 hours at full output (1800Wh/25W).

For a more accurate answer, you need a lot more information.

The output of the panel at any moment will depend on:

(1) the voltage, (which will be determined by the battery, and will change as the battery charges)

(2) the ambient temperature, and

(3) the amount light hitting the panel. The amount of light hitting the panel will depend on panel tilt, orientation, overshading, weather, altitude, location, time of year, time of day.

The truth is that solar is the way forward in Nigeria. I hope my country get to a stage when we can start looking into renewable energy sources as opposed to the problems that come with refining crude oil. God bless Nigeria.
