Fish farming is one of the most lucrative businesses in Nigeria with guaranteed return on investment. Fish feed is the major expense in fish farming and in order to minimize the cost of input, it is cheaper to produce fish feed instead of buying ready-made fish feed. Quality fish feed can be formulated from local raw materials, but the problem of instability or non-floatability of these locally produced feed caused farmers to depend on foreign pelleted feeds.

The major ingredients for producing fish feed include Rice Bran, Fish Meal, Soybean Meal, Maize, Groundnut Cake etc. which are available locally. Challenges in making feeds in Nigeria are not in sourcing the ingredient but on the techniques involved in formulation and processing. Fish feed is usually processed in two ways: pelleting or extrusion. To get premium fish feed pellet, extrusion is more popular than pelleting.
Pellets produced by pelleting sink rapidly when thrown in pond or tank which crumbles and pollutes the water in the pond leading to wastages due to inability to detect when the fishes are satisfied with feeding. Also with pelleting method, some of the materials are not well-cooked.

Extruded floating feeds are favored by farmers in Nigeria because they allow observation of the feeding processing thereby preventing wasteful feeding, the processing method also facilitates the destruction of anti-nutritional factors and other contaminants. Floating feed pellets are also extremely stable in water.

The main process of producing floating fish feed includes:
1. Grinding- Generally mix raw materials together before grinding. The machine used for grinding is the hammer mill.
2. Mixing- Powdery feed materials need to be mixed thoroughly in the mixer to ensure a high-quality of nutritional feed. The machine used for this process is a feed mill
3. Extrusion- The extrusion process utilizes heat and pressure to make floating feed pellets.
4. Drying- The dryer is necessary to remove moisture from the pellets

Even though the initial capital outlay to get the equipment may seem daunting, the machine would pay for itself in the first year with cost savings, increased production and better quality. It is thus sensible for any serious fish farmer that intends to have a sustainable and long term business to invest in a Floating Fish Feed Processing Machine. Floating feed pellets are more cost efficient, improve quality of feeds and increase profitability for farmers. You can also produce commercially and resell to other fish farmers.
