This is caused by nematodes and borers’ attacks which make plantains to dry off; all of these are soil pests. So, to control these pests a farmer needs to apply enamaticide twice a year. They can use MOCAP bastion and it will be good to have a permanent calendar. It is good to apply in April and again in September. If this is well followed, you will stop this effect. You know that the nematodes and borers attack plantains more, not bananas. That’s why banana stems which were cultivated by our parents long in the 50s are still surviving. for more info on e-book contact 08038623884(kenfarm) More on www.kenfarm.com.ng

Suckers are separated from their mother plant with a spade or machete. The sucker corm must not be damaged or chipped. Consequently the corm should be carefully peeled with a machete. The pseudo stem of the suckers should be cut off a few centimeters above the corm. Peeling of the corm delays the development of nematode infestation, while cutting of the pseudo stem reduces bulkiness and improves early growth of the newly planted sucker. Farmers complain that their plantain plantation do not produce again after 3seasons

I have been in this Biz long enough to authoritatively tell you that your plantain plantation can keep producing fruits for as long as you want it to produce (Maybe 10-20yrs)

First you will agree with me that sucker never die but keep multiplying as long as enviromental conditions are favourable.

Now, if you want your plantain plantation to keep producing fruits for so many yrs , then you have to control for the following factors:

1. Plant a viable and desease free sucker like that which you will get from kenfarm

2. Always do what we call gapping every new season

3. Add compost manure like poultry waste to your farm soil every 2season

4. Seek expertise knowledge

5. Do a soil test to ascertain your farm soil fertility at the end of 3seasons

I can go on and on.......consult kenfarm for details

For all those who is been calling us to inform us of how educative our thread is, we say thank you. It for this reason kenfarm post information that are life experience on field and not google copy and paste kind of info

Vital info for new plantain plantation owner
The info was necessary because of Qs new and potential plantain farmer usually ask on my SM pages

1. When a sucker is 6months, it has attain puberty and any treatment in terms of nutrient addition is a pure waste of time and resources. All nutrient application is to be done b4 the sucker is 6months. It takes the sucker 5-6months to take all it need to produce good fruit from the soil. Any further application of nutrient after 6months will only make the sucker pseudo-stem grow fatter. I don't think you intend to sell the pseudo-stem

2. A sucker stem that has not bear a fruit will always continue to grow even when it cut off. But the moment it bear fruit it has completed it life-cycle. So whether you cut it or not, it will whether off. This is the reason we often cut off the sucker after cutting off the bunch. Cutting off the sucker will enable more offspring to shoot out around the parent.

3. After 4weeks of transplanting, always apply fertilizer (NPK 12:12:17). If you have access to potash (Eru from Aro) then apply to the base of each stand. When the sucker attain puberty, then heap soil round the base to fortify the root and to enhance more suckers growing around the parent.

Are you awere that one of the numerous functions of micro nutrient in your soil is to catalyzes the enzymatic reactions which indirectly leads to food production in plant and subsequently leads to plant growth.

So if your farm crop is experiencing stunted growth, then it simply means one of the parameters amongst others you need to check is the LEVEL OF MICRO NUTRIENT in your farm soil

This is the reason scientifically checking for your farm soil fertility is paramount.

Cheers!!

Checking for your farm soil fertility is the first step to take before investing on this farm land. It is also the first step to take if you want your farm crop production to be sustainable.

If you plan cultivating that farm land commercially next yr, it will be a good decision to check for the soil fertility before next season.

Benefits of knowing your soil fertility
1. You will know what nutrient is lacking
2. Qty of fertilizer to apply to attain critical level, type of fertilizer to apply and what method to adopt
3. You know if the nutrient available will be released to the crop for uptake or the nutrient are available but trap
4. You know what type of crop is suitable for your farm
5. You will know whether or not your farm soil has sufficient organic mater
6. You will be able to predict yield
6. You will be able to know your soil PH and where the PH does not support the crop you want to plant, then we would be able to recommend amelioration
7. You will be able to know whether your farm soil is homogeneous or heterogeneous in nature at the top soil and down the profile

Kenfarm can keep listing the benefit as the benefit are so numerous

6months after planting, they attain puberty

9months of planting, they start to flower

11months after planting, the first fruit start to emerge

12monthe after planting, the, first set of fruit is due for harvesting

However, whether or not you will harvest your first set of fruit in 12months depends on the following factors:
1. The fertility of your soil
2. If the sucker had enough water from plantng to puberty
3. If you are able to control weed to prevent competition
4. If you seek expert advise in respect to good management practise
5. If you have purchase viable treated hybrid suckers like ours
And so many other factors

If you do not put all these factors to check, then you are likely going to harvest at 24month with rickety fruit.....Remember, real hybrid sucker are heavy feeders

Cheers!!

As simple as this may sound, I must say when diving into any Agro Biz, it is very important to ask yaself " what is my comparative advantage" ?

If you can not find any in that Biz, pls re-evaluate the Biz to check for risk factors. If you can not handle the risk factor 90%, pls flee from the AgroBiz as disaster is eminent ahead

Your farm is not sustainable because you did not figure out your AgroBiz comparative advantage and you did not figure how to deal with all your risk factors

More detail....consult expert

4weeks after transplanting, it appropriate to add NPK. At 4wks the suckers has exhausted the nutrient from parent sucker and have developed root to take up nutrient from the soil. This is d reason it proper to add NPK at this time

Re: Farmers Complain That After A Few Harvests,Plantains Don’t Do Well,Solution Here by Ken4agent(m): 8:38pm On Aug 07, 2021
Note:

Whether your hybrid sucker will express itself in terms of fruit size and numbers of fingers depends on the following factors:

1. If your soil has NPK at critical level. And most expecially if the Patacium which is responsible for fruiting is at critical level

2. If you are able to control weed from transplanting to 6months

3. If the sucker got enough water from transplanting to 6months

4. If you did a soil test to asertain the CEC value of your farm soil

If you are able to put all these factors under check, then you are sure of having a hybrid sucker fully expressed in terms of fruit size and numbers of fingers.

Your hybrid sucker is engineered to produce giant Elephant fruit with a good number of fingers, resistant to disease and 12month maturity (and not 2years like the local bride).

But if you do not put all the above factors under check, then you are not doing it right.

Things to consider when purchasing a farmland

1. Nearness to the major exit road

2. How motorable is the access road during the rainy season which is the farm activity period

3. Is the farm land experience desertification

4. How close is it to the closest village

5. What is the level of hostility of the villagers

6. The farm land topography

7. The fertility of the soil

8. The history of crops planted on the land

9. What crop you intend to plant

10. The physical characteristics of the soil
