the boy took $2 he returned $1 to each of them making $3 and $25 for the hotel room making $30, so the $1 is part of the payment they make

guests paid= 30
hotel room cost= 25
money returned to guest= 3
money kept by bellboy= 2

unless someone is very bad in math, 25+3+2=30... there is NO money missing

THIS IS MY EXPLANATION TO THE PUZZLE:
Starting from the point which says that each person invariably paid $9,we have a total of $27. Now this is where the confusion arises!
From this $27,you don't do 30-27 to get the remaining amount because $30 wasn't the real price paid. The real price collected was $25 and what they actually paid was $27.

From the above,we now find out that the they paid $27 which is true, the receptionist collected $25 which is true and the bell boy took $(27-25) which is $2 and which is CORRECT. #Shalom.
