Many people define anger differently based on their understanding, experience and perception. Anger as a state of being ‘mad’, annoyed, vexed or irritable, cannot be given a single definition.

As complex as anger is, it is equally a daunting task managing and controlling it. People’s inability to manage anger has destroyed marriages, broken relationships, caused death and injuries even when they are preventable.

Its most unfortunate that we hardly can control our emotions nowadays. Now does your blood pressure skyrocket when your child disobeys you? Do you fume and rage when you are cut off in the traffic? How do you react when people offend you? Are we quick to react? How fast are you to speak your mind when angered?

Well, however way the offense comes, its most important we handle it positively. Like I mentioned earlier, uncontrolled anger and emotions can negatively affect you psychologically, physically and even threaten your relationship with people around you.

Now if you are ready to get your anger and emotions under control, maybe you should consider following these steps.

1: Try Think Before You Talk

It might really be difficult to do, but knowing its benefits will help you stay away from saying something you will regret later. Don’t be a rush to respond to maybe your partner, friend, parents and even strangers. Take a few moments to think of the consequences of what you are about to say. Do you think it will spark another round of argument of fight? When you want to talk, don’t play the blame game!

2: Express Your Feelings In A Calm state

You will discover that you will say the wisest things once you are calm and relaxed. Be assertive but non-confrontational. Like…’I know we all feel really hurt, I believe we can work things out…’ Assertiveness lets you state your stand and needs clearer without hurting the other person’s feelings.

3: Exercise

Engaging yourself in a physical activity will tremendously help reduce stress which gives rise to anger. If you feel your anger is getting out of control, go for a walk, exercise yourself and your muscles will relax.

4: Take A Break

Breaks either from work or from activities that tend to breed stress and anger are the best ways of preventing them. A few moments of quietude and calmness, away from all issues is enough to get you balling again.

5: Identify Likely Solutions To Your Problems

It’s always better to seek for ways of solving anxiety inducing or anger inducing phenomenon instead of focusing on the cause(s). Does your child’s dirty room irritate you? Shut the door. Does your husband return late for dinner, re-adjust your schedule? The golden rule is to remind yourself that anger can never fix your problems
