The southeast governors rose in a meeting in enugu on Tuesday and resolve to finance the onitsha sea port, since the PMB administration has failed to imprint any tangible contract for the region in her 2016 budget..

So for six years your hero didn't thought of this? Despite the South East being his biggest supporters?

Here they come again...Y0ruba; monitoring Igbo success like a laser. The irony is Igbos don't care and don't want to know about Y0ruba success...just go away!

I only reply because it seems the OP is trying to blame Buhari for your lack of ports. Not everyone who points out your folly is Yoruba OK?

It is a welcome development. But how can the governors(if the news is credible o); jump to the sea when the Enugu-Onitsha expressway is like a road leading to Hell.

Let them fix the land first before going to the sea. The people will benefit more from the land as only few of them have business with the sea.

Two things will make it fail
1. when it comes to financing it, they will be divided like an earth quaked land
2. their brothers in Lagos will bribe and frustrate the project.

From a strategic and economic point of view, investing in Onitsha sea port is not a wise thing to do by Ndigbo, because:

1. River Niger upflow in the future will be controlled by an Arewa sovereign state, they will decide the volume of water from River Niger, that eventually gets to Onitsha, and nothing stops them from compromising it by building another dam within its course. Ndigbo can't control the availability of right levels of water at Onitsha port at any point in time.

2. The downward flow of River Niger will flow through the core Ijaw areas, an amphoteric area whose relationship with Ndiigbo can change for good or bad at any point in time, Onitsha port can easily be compromised by a hostile/volatile Ijaw nation.

3. Onitsha port will be so many kilometers away from the Atlantic ocean, the cost of dredging the entire course will be enormous, add this to the amount that will be needed to compensate and resettle Ijaw communities at the banks of the river, then the cost would even rise more.

In my opinion, Obuaku sea port is a better option for Ndiigbo.

The supplying upflow rivers of Obuaku are all within Igboland and can never be compromised by hateful and envious Nigerian groups, which means that the port will have steady supply of water. The downflow is through Opobo, an Igbo hybrid town and Akwa Ibom, a neighboring friendly group, Ndigbo will have a reliable port in Obuaku, we can't say the same of Onitsha.

Secondly, the distance from Obuaku to the Atlantic coast is atleast, two times less than that of Onitsha, and so will cost less to dredge and maintain.

A railway line can be constructed to connect Obuaku to Onitsha, Nnewi, Aba, Enugu, Abakaliki, Owerri, Umuahia, Orlu, Okigwe, Nsukka, Asaba, Agbor, Afikpo, Arochukwu, and all other Igbo towns.

I am happy to note that there are Igbos with functioning brain cells.
All the points you gave above were what I had in mind to pen down until I came across your contribution.

I am from Anambra state, but prospective Obuaku will be by far, the most viable seaport in core Igboland. Followed by Oguta lake in Imo state which empties into the Atlantic ocean via Bonny, another satellite Igbo town.

If a seaport is required in Igboland, then it must be Obuaku. A stitch in time...... I expected our decision makers to have realised this simple logic. I'm not sure how accurate this news is, but if it true, I am highly disappointed at the idiocy of those who chose Onitsha over Obuaku
