When i came accross this tread this afternoon,i thought "naijacuite" is a star gazer or whether she knew what has been going on in my mind concerning traffic in Lagos state well my idea is not only on traffic, but on other things that have one or two things to do with LAGOS TRAFFIC, I try to see how we can do a traffic report on the INTERNET,Discussing about the traffic issues in Lagos state and other bad roads issue.Fisrt i must say a very BIG thank you to Seun Osewa and other nairalanders, because my whole idea about creating a forum on traffic issues came from this very site, thats why i have something that is almost similar to it.
I just came up with a site called www.lagostrafficwahala.com, this a site where you can discuss traffic Issues from your local government or from the location you find your self, things you can do on the site,

1.Post and Discuss issues about areas that you know normaly experience TRAFFIC CONGESTIONS, be it weekend or week days and mostly the time,so that who ever that works on the Island coming down to the mainland can plan his/her movement or anyother locations in LAGOS STATE,

2 .Post and share your experience about the TRAFFIC MANAGERS IN LAGOS STATE, the GOOD,the BAD and the UGLY sides of these managers,

3.Post and Discuss reasons why some Lagos drivers use to costitute nuisance on Lagos roads,e.g NOT OBEYING THE TRAFFIC LIGHTS,ZEBRA CROSSING LINES,& OTHER TRAFFIC SIGNS, Why some Learned Drivers in LAGOS STATE CHOSE TO FOLLOW ONE-WAY and sometimes still blame the so called commercial bus drivers anytime they indulge in such act.

4.LOCATION FINDER:This is a section where you can post a particular location you need to locate in Lagos,e.g If you have an Interview in a particular area you are new to,you can post such area 2days b4 the appointment day so that FORUMITES can give you possible directions on how to locate the place

There are so many useful sections on the site and i must confess suggestions on how we can make it work is welcomed, cos i am an information person and sometimes i control TRAFFIC IN MY AREA VOLUNTARILY,but i cant just swallow the attitude of some Lagos drivers that are even civilised,i have had situations where i have been beaten and pushed away by mobile police officers trying to beat TRAFFIC
But one thing i believe in is that by proper ENLIGHTMENT AND RE-ORIENTATION,we can all make it work in this state.THE SITE HAS BEEN LINKED TO DIFF.TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY IN LAGOS STATE AND THE LAGOS STATE GOVERNMENT,for them to read and know what Lagosians are saying about TRAFFIC SITUATIONS IN THE STATE.

6.IF YOU ALSO KNOW OF BAD ROADS THAT NEEDS TO BUILT OR REHABILITED PLEASE FEEL FREE TO POST AND SHARE,LETS INFORM OURSELVES ABOUT BLACK SPOTS AND AREA THAT YOU KNOW THESE "MEN OF THE UNDERWORLD" CAN EASILY ROBB YOU OF YOUR PROPERTIES WHEN PASSED AT NIGHTS,I have had such experience ON THE BRIDGE AROUND OGUDU TOP OPPOSITE IKOSI KETU at night these boys dressed like police officers and ordered us to surender all our belongings,so there are so many HIDE OUTS LIKE THESE IN LAGOS THAT MANY LAGOSIANS DONT KNOW,BUT SOMEBODY CAN BE INFORMED THROUGH THIS FORUM

My brothers and sisters this my contribution and i must acknowledge your encouragement and the the positive ideas shared here and impacted into me
Thank You

Does everything have to be dot coms, telecoms, GPS etc etc??

What about basic tools that would benefit the majority who have very little to do with these things you guys are saying here?

That corn grinding machine or whatever just posted above is a welcome exception.  cool

What about developing a radically cheap ploughing vehicle for rural farmers?

Or pushing a new crop variant like parsnips?

What about pioneering new, cheaper, more solid building styles using local materials?

What about developing exciting new cuisines from our predictable local fare?

Or new varieties/flavourings of palm wine, professionally branded and packaged?

Look what Europeans did with wine from grapes. You've got countless varieties and flavours, all from the same fruit called grapes.

We should have palm wine châteaux, each catering to a unique taste.

This is what we mean by a country becoming developed.

WE become our own standards for excellence. Harnessing, developing, branding, and promoting our own resources without fear or favour.

Then OTHER  nations will come looking at us to see what what we're doing.

Great minds here!

Well done guys!

I have always believed that the best promising opportunities are only available in the developing world and this video;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXTBXLNduy8&feature=channel  attested to that.

I would love to appreciate all that has contributed to this thread so far and state here that we are the future of the next generation.

Why, if you are asking, this is because there are always 'important problems' in our environment yearning for solutions and it takes only the creative minds to find solutions to any problems first by converting them into 'innovative challenges' put a 'question mark ?' instead of 'exclamation mark !'

We have just created an online community called Creative Ideas Development Initiative (CIDI)

The community URL; www.cidionline.org

FB page; http://www.facebook.com/pages/Creative-Ideas-Development-Initiative/136400679745900

The goal of this community is to inspire young minds to creativity & innovations and create a platform where great thinkers can rub minds, remember, Iron sharpens Iron.  We are not there to collect ideas but to always discuss possibilities and empower one another.

We hope this platform will grow to fulfill its goals. And for this to happen, it requires the effort of all of us that has develop our minds to achieve something worthwhile like I did here; http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1572834357&v=photos#!/album.php?aid=24420&id=148433488519387

So, please I'm using this opportunity to invite all great minds to come on board and let us create a formidable community of great innovators! And change the world!

Welcome Aboard.

I
have borne this idea for years in my mind: Can we at least work with the Chineese to develope a muffler for all these noisy generators in Naija(imagine the gun silenser effect). As I write, a nearby gen is almost giving me a headache. It would be ideal if we also pass a law to have all gen sets buy and use the muffler thus promoting the sales of the product for the inventors/investors.

@Naijacutee,,

Good thought and Great thread, keep it up.

I want to stress out a point here to everyone of us, it is high time we stop nurisng the idea or thought of: "How many people can afford our products or innovations". Please if you are one of those nursing such thought please put an end to that because if you continue that way you won't do anything!.One thing we need to understand here is that our inovations are necessicities and if they really worth it and solve people's problem, customers will come hunting for them irrespective of their prices.

So what are you waiting for?, Go ahead and you will be amazed at the result you will achieve.

I wish you all the very best,GREAT INVENTORS, smiley

Thanks

This is one of the best threads on nairaland. I have several ideas and I've put one on paper. If it works, by the grace of God, it would fetch me billions of naira. Therefore, I can't share it. Well, one of my ideas is an anti-porn internet-enabled mobile phone. This would good for kids.
Pls, can anyone tell me any manufacturing company in Nigeria that deals with plastics, more like toys (electronics)?

Good thread, but how about simply replicating what's already out there! But just for fun how about a service that notifies me when PHCN/NEPA will take light and bring it back? It can even be SMS based!

Solve local problems like power shortage or water shortages.

Help cities like Port Harcourt by providing truly affordable transport.

Knock out nipost by creating a low-cost speedy alternative without using government subventions.

provide high tech security solutions to wealthy people.

I think this is a great Idea and I don't think it is as outlandish as you think. You just have to do the research and figure out who can make it for you. It probably already exists and you know nothing about it.

Of course, we can always repackage an already established niche to make it look brand new.

Hello people, i am currently working on prototyping the first 24 hr world clock, this is a project i have been working on for about 2 years now,it is (to the best of my knowledge) going to be the first single face analog clock that can tell 24 hr time(i.e. Whether it is a.m or p.m) for any place in the world. It can be put to use in airports, stadia, televion, banks, homes, schools and indeed anywhere there is the need to know what the time is. This idea is still in initial prototype stage.

More inventions I've toyed around with in my mind :-

Food :-

- I was wondering how feasible it would be to make 'instant' soups (Egusi/Oha/Ogbono/Peppersoup etc) which tastes exactly like the 'non-instant' ones. Who would buy it? Working mums, Bachelors, students at Uni etc. The idea is to prepare soup ingredients up to certain different stages, preserve them at these stages and then vacuum package them to lock in the flavour and nutrients until hot water is added. To cook, just add hot water and meat. As soups are part of our staple diet, this would make life a lot easier for people and this would be cheaper than cooking a N3,500 pot of soup for a big family every 2 days. Most importantly, you would be able to store these for weeks and have them taste fresh everytime you 'cook' soup in 2 minutes smiley

- A machine for washing 'Onubu' (bitterleaf). It takes AGES to was Onubu leaves, and sometimes I wonder who is burdened with this task in busy restaurants. How about inventing a dynamo-powered device with a small tank and a funnel to drip-feed the water into the leaves below. So to wash the leaves, you just wind the handle and put water in the tank. . . and the dynamo uses a rotor to churn the leaves and squeeze out the bitterness

Waoh, @naijacutee, your suggestion on traffic couldn't be more in sync with my thoughts and the applications that I eventually developed, would love to work with you if you want to work with us.

We are currently forming teams for our individual projects, visit www.goldenstepsng.net to see if you will like to be part of any of our teams.

HISTORY
-----------
I started writing the application sometime 2008, the original concept was to encourage people to submit traffic information and for others to benefit from this submissions (the original domain name is www.xTraffix.com). However, due to the fact that most people would rather come looking for traffic information, than willing to submit traffic information, there was very sparse data coming into the system.

Therefore, after a couple of months, I started rethinking the approach, and decided to rewrite the application and sell to Lagos state government, since through LASTMA they can provide a steady and reliable source of traffic information. After rewriting the application, we approached the state government, and were even invited for a demo at LASTMA (that's why you'll notice very old traffic data on xTraffix.com), a report was filled from LASTMA to the Ministry of Transportation, but unfortunately the trill in the demo room was not carried over to the Ministry of transportation, and the report has been lost along the way since last year. I have a team working on pushing that through(I still need assistance on this one though).

However, recently, I was sitting with a group of Internet Entrepreneurs and discovered that one of them had an idea on providing traffic information, but only through Twitter, and also noticed the guy couldn't take his eyes off xTraffix.com, sensing competition, I told him about working together, which he agreed to verbally, but since been elusive about a meeting, therefore, I decided to revamp my original idea of everybody helping everybody else (www.NigerianTraffic.com), and hopefully this will kick off better than the last one (have more capital to play around with than the last time). I sure hope he stole some ideas from xTraffix.com, because adding twitter as a source of traffic information was inspired by his approach to solving the problem.

I love competition, now what is driving me is beating everybody else to it, even xTraffix.com, but I need your help, there is a limit to what one person can do, if you think you can be part of our team, kindly go to www.goldenstepsng.net for details on how to join a team.

Dear Brothers & Sisters,

I am new and like this Business Thread but as brainy as we Nigerians are we should learn to trust one another especially when someone brings a business idea that can make serious money. There a NL member that I was chatting to a couple of years, he had this fantastic idea where all vehicles coming into Nigeria will be tracked. He kept his idea close to his chest which I expected but should have shared the idea a bit more, you never know where you can find help

To cut the story short I was only investigating a bit more about the car industry in naija and noticed that the government had introduced a system to deal with this, the NL Member idea is worthless. All this ideas or business started with someone sharing their ideas with friends or family. Not all people will agree with your idea, I guess when NL started alot of people he told laughed at him and other people invested their time in it now its a success story.

Sorry if I have bored anyone.

A trendchecker for Twitter. Something that can identify similar hashtags and mentions, and group them according to their locations/originating ip addresses. Something like an Alexa.com, but for Twitter. This has potential to even be used as a news tool. One can search for tweets originating from a certain area, and piece a story together.
