New York - A Nigerian woman accused of running a $4000-an-hour hooker service online out of her New York apartment pleaded guilty on Monday to attempted money laundering in a deal that allows her to be released from jail immediately.

Maria Uzo Egwu, 30, admitted in court that her online escort service, Glamour Roses, was actually a prostitution business, but she pleaded guilty only to attempted money laundering in the second degree.

State Supreme Court Justice Carol Berkman sentenced Egwu, who had no prior arrests, to time served - just under five months. Egwu, indicted on charges of promoting prostitution and money laundering, would have faced up to 15 years in prison if she had been convicted after trial.

Hidden assets

Egwu had been jailed on $250 000 bail since her arrest in February. The judge refused to lower her bail after prosecutors said the defendant was a Nigerian national who had hidden assets in her home country.

Assistant District Attorney Anne Rudman told the judge that Egwu was sending money abroad by way of Spartenberg, North Carolina. She did not elaborate.

Rudman also said that Egwu was building a lavish residential compound in Nigeria and that she and her sister often flew to Europe and spent hundreds of thousands of dollars at stores like Gucci.

Limo called Decadent

When Egwu was arrested, police seized $212 000 in cash from her Manhattan apartment, $417 000 from bank and investments and a limousine with the license plate Decadent.

Egwu's lawyer, Mark Pollard, said the judge also required his client to forfeit almost everything of value that she owned, including the cash, the money from the accounts, the car and her computer equipment.

Egwu's plea was followed by her sister's guilty plea to misdemeanour money laundering. Mnenne Egwu-Igwe, 42, a naturalised American citizen, admitted that she received money from Egwu and knew it was earned by prostitution.

The judge ordered Egwu-Igwe to pay $50 000 in forfeited ill-gotten gains.

Egwu achieved limited fame as a guest on Howard Stern's radio show and was once hostess of her own cable television show, Dance Ventures of Uzo. She now claims to be embarrassed about that period of her life, her lawyer said.

When Egwu was arrested, District Attorney Robert Morgenthau said she ran her business out of eight East Side apartments and grossed more than $2 million a year. He said Egwu hired the women for her service and set up their dates.

Glamour Roses

Morgenthau said the Glamour Roses Web site promoted an "escort" service that provided "upscale gentlemen" with the "most exquisite women in the entire world".

The Web site featured photographs of women, some of them nude, rated A, B, C, S (for super) or M (for mega). Prices of the women's company ranged from about $1200 an hour to almost $4000 an hour and up to $32 000 for a weekend. - Sapa-AP.
