While most expectant mothers are filled with ecstasy about the prospect of having a child, women experiencing unwanted or unplanned pregnancies are usually not. And most of them end up walking away from their baby. Fear, anxiety, panic, resentment and poverty are some of the cited reasons this.
Currently in africa, there are no statistics detailing the number of children who are abandoned annualy. But in South Africa alone, it is documented that about 3500 babies are abandoned annually.
This goes to show the unpredictable nature of humans.
Below is a list of bizarre places where newborn babies have been found abandoned in Africa.


1. PIT LATRINE

On the 30th of April, 2016. One Mr Andrew Kalima received the shock of his life when he was attracted to the sound of a baby crying from the pit latrine when he went to answer a call of nature. Upon hearing this sound, He did what any normal human would do, he alerted his neighbors and after confirming that it was really a baby, they called the Police who rushed to scene and managed to take out the baby alive with the help from the community. After which the baby was taken to a nearby Hospital for treatment. Investigations by malawian police later revealed that one Mercy Ali (a neighbour to the man that found the baby) was the mother of the baby. She was taken into custody by the police and when interviewed she revealed that she committed the despicable offense because of the fear she had for her husband who was in South Africa. According to her no one, not even her neighbours knew that she was pregnant and that she gave birth in her house and later dumped the baby into a pit latrine to die.
In a similar incident, at about noon on Wednesday, February 24, 2016. A baby who was abandoned in a pit latrine was rescued in Masaka area of Nasarawa, Nigeria - The baby was just a day old-.

2. BUSH
About a month-old baby girl wrapped in a cloth was found dumped in bushes near a Secondary School at Duayaw Nkwanta in the Brong Ahafo Region, Ghana. The baby was discovered and rescued by some residents around the school at about 6:20am on a Sunday morning with her mouth sealed with a super glue. And was handed over to Duayaw Nkwanta Department of Social Welfare who later took the baby to a St Johns of God hospital in Duayaw Nkwanta for treatment.

3. IN A MAIZE FARM
On the 11th of march 2016, A 15 year old girl identified as Maria Fred dumped her one year old baby in a maize garden belonging to one of her neighbour identified as Agnes Chibula. Who later woke up to the sound of the baby crying mercilessly. Before going out to search for the crying baby she woke up other people and together they went to rescue the baby. Fortunately the baby was not hurt. Not long after the rescue of the baby a group of people who identified the baby told the police who the mother was. Following the identification of both the baby and the mother. A manhunt was launched for the mother Who was later apprehended that same night at a bottle store within the city.


4. ON THE STREET
On the 28th of january 2016, the body of an abandoned newborn baby was found wrapped inside a knotted plastic bag on the corner of anton lembede and joe slovo, in Durban south africa. The baby who was possibly full term was taken into custody by a nearby hospital. There is still an ongoing investigation at the Durban central police station.

5. A SEPTIC TANK
On Nov 14, 2012, Occupants of a school hostel located near a tertiary institution in Imo State, Nigeria woke up on to the sound of a baby crying. But could not decipher where the sound was coming from until a search party comprising mainly of male students was organized the cry of was then traced to a septic tank in the hostel; when the tank was pried open, the baby was found tucked inside with its umbilical cord around its neck, though found alive, the baby died before it was brought out of the septic tank.

6. NEXT TO A RAILWAY LINE

On 28th of november 2015. Two young males walked into a south african police station, carrying the infant. According to them they had found the baby, wrapped with a baby blanket, lying on it's stomach, abandoned next to a very busy railway line. An inquiry was made to see if they could find out who the mother of the child, but no success was made. So the baby was handed over to one Mrs linda Hleza who owns a children's home. She has since named the child Kamva, which means future.

7. A CARDBOARD BOX
In the province of Taroudant, Morocco, a group of people discovered a suspiciouly looking cardboard box on the roadside, when it was opened they received the shock of their life, in it was a naked newborn Baby Girl who was less than a month old. Thankfully she was found alive and in good health, Local witnesses who made the shocking discovery later contacted the Moroccan Royal Gendarmerie, who came at the scene and took the newborn to the Children Department of Hospital Hassan II in Agadir.
