Tai Solarin once said that "A school closed for a week did not set the nation backward by a week but by years"
The intellectual dictatorship in our Universities is a serious issue that must be addressed. Every peaceful protest equals a ban. A university is supposed to awake nationalistic and patriotic spirit in every students; but once students decides to speak up for themselves in a peace way, the senate clamps down.
What message are we sending to these young minds? Are we trying to produce idiots? The rising dictatorship of the intellectual class reminds one of the days of Abacha, Babangida and Buhari. Isn't it a shame that universities as old as UI, OAU, UniLag, UNN etc cannot generate their own steady water, cannot generate their light. Its like we have an illusion of Education in this country. What happened to peaceful resolution and dialogue? If a university that is moulding the future of a country cannot resolve its own issues then are we not kidding ourselves? A university Senate that does not have any other thing on its strategy plate than shutting the school and hostel once protest starts is not fit. Every Nigeria has a right to peaceful protest.
Most annoying is the method by which they shut these institutions, chasing students out by 6pm and locking the hostels, how will they get home? The school senate does not care what happens to these students because their ward are peacefully locked in. The era of rustication, suspension and backhand tactics in the resolution of crisis must be replace with modern and innovative conflict management style.
Edo state Governor Adams gave an analogy once; "You have a public chef who cooks for the public but does not eat his own food, rather, he goes to a five star restaurant to eat." Most of the members on our school Senate have children abroad so also the ruling class. So why wont they let it rot. Our ruling class must speak the truth to themselves and weigh in on this matter.
We give our graduates an illusion of a degree but a degree that does not equal their competence. Its really sad when Ghana that we chased out of our land is now a place where we send our kids. We send them to their mushroom University just because of their fast calendar.
Nigeria and Nigerians we need a volte-face. Longe Segun Nomolos
