And yet some of U who seem to have read it and seen d obvious still want to find a way to ignore the clear facts. First d govt claims there wasn't plans for subsidy and den it turns out dey are still paying subsidy after all but that is by the way.. Subsidy payments didn't jus start with dis govt or even the previous so it begs d question as to why there hasn't been upward reviews all thru d period Oil prices kept soaring reaching an all-time high. Jus few weeks ago, a report indicated dis govt was paying higher for subsidy which is confusing considering their initial claims concerning subsidy payments. Since d bolded indicates review of price of petrol upwards with increasing Oil price, then it is only logical petrol price was supposed to have been reviewed downwards with the crash of oil prices dis past year..

Don't mind abobaku omenka ... Supporting everything irrespective of how it affect the masses, why was there not review f price when it was $28/barrel so that the masses will benefit ,,, they hide the product and sell even above modulated price, now that there is a "Proposed" increase they have started making plans for increase.... obailala come n see this.

now tell us whether btw me n u who is confused in the subsidy matter?

lemme tell u how price modulation work, the govt fix the price of commodity, brings in d product at a lesser price n sell to its citizens at their determined price. they make gains from it, but when the price of that product increase, since there is already a fix n determine price by the govt, they use the monies gained during the period the product was less costly to augment for the increase. they aint paying subsidy, they aint subsidising aanything. the only bailout for them is they promised to review the price every 3mnths. nnpc/ppmc did the price review last on march ending, lets wait n see what june ending will bring to us.

I still remeber I told us that increase in crude price will expose the corruption n weakness of price modulation. am vindicated,

When price falls in the international market,no one talks about reduces prices at our end, but u hear increase in pump prices as soon as there is an increase in crude price in the international market. Then, dey use different grammars to do cover up!

Most you seem not o have read even a single line but just the title. A portion of the article was even highlighted to reflect the reason behind the imminent rise yet you people just couldn't spare a second to read it before commenting.

The suspicion that there might soon be a price hike is due to the marginal rise in the price of crude at the international market- it is not the FG's fault.

You guys should get a grip on your emotions already. It sucks.

Crude is still very low compared to the levels it was 2 years ago, $45 today. If FG is planning to increase prices when it's not even back to the 70s or 80s, I wonder what will happen when it rises significantly..

Right now petrol is still more or less the same price as it was when crude was $100+ in 2014. if Nigerians did not benefit at the pump from low crude prices, why should they "benefit" from "marginal increase in crude"? Government should be held accountable, even if you are going to defend them, it shouldn't be done blindly...

do u know d meaning of fault!

whose fault is it?

na we the common men on the street de run nnpc?

na we say make dem adoot price modulation instead of total deregulation of the product even when oil is almost worthless?

so whose fault is it omenka? I guess pdp.

I said it in this forum that we shud pray price of crude shudnt rise if not the weakness of price modulation will be too bad for nigerians.

. What most are complaining is government selfishness....

When there was reduction of price globally, did the govt of Nigeria reduce price for the masses?

Now that there is a proposed increase which is yet not official the government has started making plan to increase....

Hope you get it now that the GOVT don't give a fukc about the Masses...
Calm down bro. The truth is that as long as we rely on importation of fuel we will continue to have these challenges. The the only realistic and sustainable solution is to refine our crude here. But as long as we continue to import we would be exposed to many variables that may be beyond our control which will in turn determine the price we pay at the pumps
Let's encourage the refining of our crude here and bring relief to everyone.

When you use the money gained to augment the increase, what do you call that?.... Isn't that subsidising?.... If it isn't subsidising, so why is Kachikwu talking of total removal of subsidy now?

Look man, you are in a hurry to claim Kachikwu, a first class brain is confused, but you only end up exposing your own intellectual vulnerability.

One of the meetings was held at the headquarters of the State Security Service in Abuja where the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Ibe Kachikwu, and his counterpart in the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, met with heads of security agencies to finetune possible security response should Nigerians pour into the streets to protest the policy.

Official spokespersons for key petroleum industry agencies were evasive when asked for comments Sunday afternoon.

NNPC spokesperson, Garbadeen Mohammed, said reports of the planned introduction of deregulation by government was new to him.

Full deregulation policy, which involves opening up the downstream petroleum industry for participation by all players, particularly the private sector, is widely considered the panacea for the incessant fuel supply crisis in the country.

With full deregulation, there will be fair competition, with the burden of petroleum products supply and distribution shared between private investors and government, with both having equal access to all aspects of industry operations, ranging from refining, sourcing, to marketing and distribution.

While government will continue to monitor and enforce compliance with established standards, products pricing will be determined by the prevailing market forces in an atmosphere of competition.

Over the years, government bore the burden of subsidy payments on petroleum products consumed in the country.

Barring any last-minute change in plans, the federal government will, in a few days, introduce policy changes heŕalding the full deregulation of the downstream sector of the Nigerian petroleum industry, officials well briefed on the matter have told PREMIUM TIMES.

Nigerians may have to brace up for a minimum of 27.17 per cent hike in fuel price nationwide, the officials said.

The policy, they say, is likely to push the pump price of petrol to about N110 per litre
at NNPC-owned filling stations and higher at other independent outlets.

Amid fears of a possible backlash reminiscent of the reaction by Nigerians in January 2012 when former President Goodluck Jonathan attempted to introduce a similar measure, PREMIUM TIMES learnt that no formal announcement of the policy would be made by government.

Industry sources familiar with the plan said government was on the verge of discreetly giving permission to petroleum products marketers to gradually adjust their pump prices as early as midweek to signal the formal take-off of deregulation in the country.
