And that ladies and gentlemen is the reason the Nigerian mentality is so phucked up. They have been so used to absurdity that it is now normal. I feel so sorry for you though. You have never experienced nor seen a better way so everything is okay to you. Ok. Carry on. You will chop the ponmo eventually.
You talk about mentality but you do not offer any reason why it is wrong other than visceral emotive stuff and the assumption that the rectitude of your convictions should be clear to all. There are cultural practices that are abominable all over the world so do not denigrate Nigerian mentality,if you have a point make it.

I will give you a simple example to illustrate the point. P0rnography is legal and so commonplace now in the West that many do not question it. Without offering my own view there are cultures that find this bizarre. The issue at point is cultural relativism and a need for own culture to impose its quirks as normal but there is no SI unit of what is normal it is really a matter of choice like choices to permit bull fights in Spain or even boxing around the world. In Germany it is legal for siblings to have sex

Some may find boxing more objectionable and one cannot disagree on intellectual grounds. These are emotive issues let us not pretend that there is anything intellectual going on when gay marriages are legalized. Societies make choices that other societies reject that is the diversity of human development we do not need to denigrate ourselves for our own particular set of quirks. I would rather have Oro festival in Ikorodu than Gay marriages

Lol...Bros is comparing pornography, a business, to a barbaric culture. I thought he was going to give examples of actual cultures. None of your examples indicates threat to life. Oro festival does. Any culture that infringes on the rights of others is insane. The true concept of freedom is alien to you anf a lot of Nigerians, which is why you don't understand.

First what is culture. Pornography has to be part of culture before it can be a business. Define culture?# It is not a business in Nigeria or much of AFrica and the reason is because it is not part of culture in Africa. With much respect you do not seem to understand the word culture, certainly not in a scholastic sense.
Leaving that to one side, You say the culture is barbaric . That is an emotional one and I take you back to my earlier post and to cultural relativism. How do we decide what is barbaric. First you must define it. Is bull fighting barbaric,is incest barbaric is boxing barbaric is gay marriage barbaric?

You use a western framework to define what should be a good culture .This is really a sad example and illustration of the degree of how our people are brainwashed.Anyway my point was not that Oro is good or bad but that there are objectionable cultures EVERYWHERE and the fact that we have some is not unique and therefore not grounds for self loathing or self denigration. In time when culture lose their usefulness they are discarded . The use of terms like Nigerian mentality are not only unnecessary and inappropriate they reflect a profound lack of self identity and completion of spiritual colonization

Thiis business of rights of others as the ultimate test of culture is funny and naive.First the rights have to be defined. For centuries blacks had no rights in America so there was no question of impinging on their "rights". You use Western logic and frameworks showing no understanding that there ARE ALTERNATIVES. You reason at a very high level, for an undergraduate. But at some point you need to graduate to YOUR OWN ideas and thoughts

I wonder why you still don't get this. Or you just don't want to because you are so used to this. Any culture or norm that infringes on the rights of others should be done away with. Anyone can worship whoever or whatever they want but it should not affect my rights as a citizen.

Once upon a time, there was this girl called Saluwe and her parents. Saluwe was a very obedient and helpful girl. Her father and mother relied on her to do anything they asked. She would help to cook, wash her clothes and her parents’ clothes also and she also cleaned the house and the compound. She also helped her parents on their farm during planting and harvesting seasons. Saluwe was so helpful that her parents did not even need to supervise her, they just told her what to do, and she would do it before they came back from the farm. The end of the harvest season when people had harvested their crops was the time for the ‘Oro’ festival. During this time, a curfew ‘isede’ was usually called from sunset until sunrise. An “isede” was called so that all the important rituals that the “orisa” - gods required could be done to thank them for a bountiful harvest and to pray for another peaceful year. In preparation for the Oro festivals, all families in the town would cook different kinds of food, and prepare lavish dishes to entertain each other and also to give as sacrifice to the orisa. The orisa are gods in the Yoruba pantheon. In preparation for the Oro festival, Saluwe’s mother and father went to the farm to harvest the food that they would cook and prepare for their guests during the days of the festival. Before going to the farm, they asked Saluwe to rub the walls of their house before they got back from the farm. In the days before the Europeans introduced paints to Africa, people built houses with mud, and if you put water on the palms of your hands and rubbed the walls for a long time, the walls would become very glossy and smooth. Saluwe did as she was told, and even went to the stream to fetch water, because once the sun went down, the curfew would be on, and nobody, especially females could venture out of their houses. Saluwe had just finished rubbing the walls when her parents arrived from the farm. Saluwe’s mother praised her for a job well done and said to her “You are all dirty from rubbing the walls. Why don’t you go and wash up while I prepare dinner.” As Saluwe was about to take some of the water that she had gotten from the stream, her father said “No. Run quickly to the stream and wash up there, don’t waste the water that we have here.” Saluwe answered that the sun was going down and the curfew would soon be on. He replied “If you hurry up and take a quick dip in the water, you should be back before the curfew is on.” Off she went towards the stream, singing gaily. At the stream she met three strangers who asked her what she had come for. She said she had come to bathe in the river. They asked her if she didn’t know about the isede, but she replied that her father had told her that if she took a quick bath in the river she should be back before the isede came on. The strangers told her to go ahead and take a bath, but she must not come back again during the oro festival. The next day, Saluwe’s parents went to the market to sell some of the crops they had harvested. While they were gone, Saluwe cleared the compound of grass and weeds and swept the yard clean. She was covered with dust by the time her parents came home. Again, Saluwe’s mother told her to go and wash up while she was cooking dinner. Again, Saluwe’s father told her to go to the stream to bathe. Saluwe told her father that she had met three strangers at the stream the day before and they had told her not to come back. Her father answered “It is not the business of strangers whether we have curfews or not in this town. Run along and take a quick dip. You should be back before the curfew comes on.” So, off Saluwe went. At the stream, she met the same three strangers that she saw the day before. They asked her “What are you doing back here? Didn’t we warn you not to come back during the oro festival?” She answered that her father had told her to come again to the river since nothing happened to her yesterday. The strangers then told her to go ahead and bathe, but they turned their backs towards her while she bathed. When Saluwe finished bathing, she tried to step out of the stream, but her feet were rooted to the stream bed. She could not move. Saluwe started yelling for help. But because it was curfew time, there was nobody around to hear her. Back at home, Saluwe’s mother kept looking out the door, waiting to catch a sight of her daughter, but Saluwe did not show up. Saluwe’s mother could not go in search of her daughter because the oro had come out and the roars of the oro could be heard all over town. She comforted herself that Saluwe had stayed at a relative’s house when the curfew started, and she would be home in the morning. Early the next morning, Saluwe’s parents started looking for her in all their relatives and friends’ houses, but she could not be found. The entire town started looking for Saluwe, but she could not be found. Then they headed towards the stream because that was the last place she went. When they reached the stream, they found Saluwe, but she had sunk down in the river, up to her chest. Saluwe’s mother started screaming “E gba mi o!” E ba mi yo omo mi l’odo!” The townspeople tried to pull Saluwe out of the stream, but she only sank deeper. All the while Saluwe was singing: Call: Alantere O! Refrain: Antere Iya ni n pa’le de’un -Mother said to rub the walls for her Baba ni n pa’le de’un -Father said to rub the walls for him Mo mu’le mo pa rain -I rubbed the walls till they were shiny Mo m’odede mo pa gbara -I rubbed the halls till they were smooth Iya ni n b’omile wera -Mother said to wash with the water at home Baba ni n r’odo lo we -Father said to go and wash in the river Mo d’odo mo b’Oluweri -At the river I met Oluweri Mo b’orisa meta -I met three orisa Okan f’oju, okan y’aro -One was blind, one was crippled Okan oku s’eti gboin -The last one was deaf B’e ba de’le o -When you get home E ba mi ki iya mi -Greet my mother for me E ba mi ki baba mi -Greet my father for me E p’o d’oju ala o -Say I’ll see them in their dreams E p’o d’arinako -Say I’ll appear to them on the way Alantere o! -Alantere o! As the townspeople pulled, Saluwe only sank deeper. There was nothing to hold on to, except Saluwe’s head, which snapped off in her father’s hand, and the rest of her body sank completely into the river. The moral of the story is that one should obey the rules set down by the elders. The consequences of disobedience are great

that is how you spit thrash does it have legal backing? we have Lagos State Ministry of Chieftaincy and Local Government Affairs that's the ministry that oversee such activities, In case you are still in doubt you can consult the Lagos State Gazette, some festivals are captured in it, which am very sure the festival in question is one it. Get your fact right, You think in this 21st century some set of people will just restrict movement without legal backing, seriously you are sleeping on a bicycle

Nigeria is one of those dark nations where people who should protect the culture find it a 'archaic'...
.
It is one thing to fight against practises like human sacrifice n such other things..
.
but it is stupidity to open your mouth to say some cultural practise should be done away with....
if u r not involved, leave those involved to do their thing.
