Amnesty To Boko Haram Terrorists When The Corridor Is Not Yet Safe by OLADD: 4:55am On May 10, 2016
For those with functional and prejudice-free third eyes, the news of Federal Government granting amnesty in the form of rehabilitation to repentant Boko Haram terrorists through the Safe Corridor Initiative did not strike any semblance of surprise. In other words, we had seen this coming. What should constitute worry to Nigerians with discerning minds is the audacity at which the Buhari admisitration is going about with the initiative with little or no emphasis on its ripple effects. We should be concerned with apparent silence of international bodies and social critics on the danger and repercussionary effects of such initiative at this stage of our nationhood when sectional agitations seem to be on the increase.

In the rundown to the last elections, President Buhari as the candidate of All Progressives Congress was quoted to have vowed to defeat Boko Haram and ensure rescue of the abducted Chibok girls within a short period of time if elected as the president. Eleven months down the lane, not only has the Buhari govt failed to effect the release of the girls from Boko haram captivity, attacks by the sect are yet to completely abate This now triggers question on the rationale for a decision to place those responsible for kidnap and monumental destruction of lives and property in the country on amnesty without trial.

We may also like to ask the Military authority if these sect members have jettisoned the ideologies for which they brought terror on the nation and other neighbouring countries. They owe the nation explanations on whether or not those responsible for sponsoring Boko haram activities had been unmasked through confessional statements from the "repentant" members of the sect before considering them for rehabilitation and pardon. If these had not been done, then Nigeria is sitting on a keg of gunpowder the result of which may shake its foundation to unprecedented collapse.

Question should also be thrown to Buhari's government what amnesty to Boko haram in whatever form portends for the continued peace of the nation. Does it mean that people with criminal intentions now have the licence to kill, maim and destroy lives and property under the disguise of fighting for religious, political or socio-ethinic relevance in future knowing that after all said and done, the govt in power would not have any choice other than granting them amnesty? Do we know if among the 800 repentant insurgents were killers of innocent citizens at Emab Plaza, Yanya Motor Park, Jos Terminus, Church and mosque premises etc? Will the relatives of those killed by the terrorists in the last 6-7 years take this govt's action with a pinch of salt and move on with their lives as if nothing had happened? Are we not setting a dangerous precedence for future hostilities and national discord if criminals are now rewarded with amnesty for doing a good job in rendering fellow citizens physically, emotionally and financially decapitated?

Let it be echoed to all and sundry home and abroad that the Nigerian govt may have succeeded in rewarding criminality with a pat in the back instead of allowing justice to take its full course. We may have sent a wrong signal to our neighbours who are involved in the ongoing fight against Boko haram. We may have surreptitiously given free licence to militants, terrorists and other criminally-minded persons to take up arms against their fatherland. This govt may have established the culture of making the country ungovernable by those who may have one or two grouses against our continued peace, collective will and existence.

God bless Nigeria.

Are these full fledged terrorists or men who were conscripted and forced to do the bidding of Shekau?

Only the court of law can determine the extent of involvement of an accused in any crime. In other words, those forcefully conscripted into the sect should exploit the window of defence whenever they go on trial.

A stitch in time saves nine. Buhari and the military authority can still retrace their steps by making prompt corrections. It's a dangerous precedence to give amnesty to terrorists.

I think this is even beyond human intellectual capability, it speaks volume of one's conscience and respect for human lives. Those sent to the great beyond in their prime may not forgive this govt.

Good question. Why waste billions of naira in prosecuting the war when pardon is on the card.

Mental pic from the scenes of Abuja bombings makes me sick up till this moment. The blood of the dead will surely cry for justice.

so bad.
why grant them amnesty when we are sure of winning the war?

it seems as if buhari and other northern elites are having a secret agenda. something that will be too tough for the country to handle.
