Julia Roberts made a bold protest at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival by refusing to wear shoes on the red carpet.

The 48-year-old Oscar winner stunned in a black Georgio Armani Prive gown – but raised eyebrows when she hoisted up her hem to reveal naked feet.

This may seem un-newsworthy, but the statement has been interpreted by many to be a metaphorical middle finger to the film festival organisers after controversy was caused last year when some female festival attendees were turned away from screenings for wearing ‘the wrong footwear’.

It is also believed that red carpet dress code strictly demands women wear heels.

This is not the first time Julia has used a red carpet to make a statement.

In 1999 she flashed hairy armpits at the premiere of Notting Hill with many seeing this move as a statement of feminism.

Julia is in Cannes to support her new movie Money Monster – co-starring George Clooney, British actor Jack O’Connell, and directed by Jodie Foster.
