NLC, TUC lobby airports, banks, schools to shut down

A major crack in the organised labour movement in the country may limit the success of the planned nationwide strike over the federal government’s deregulation of the petroleum sector, LEADERSHIP Sunday has observed.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) at a press briefing yesterday, advised Nigerians to stock sufficient food items that would last for a while as offices, markets and schools would remain closed for the period of the strike, beginning from Wednesday.

However, it was observed during the briefing that the NLC and TUC had yet to harmonise with its affiliate unions in the oil sector, NUPENG and PENGASSAN, both of which had earlier endorsed the federal government’s deregulation move.

LEADERSHIP Sunday recalls that NUPENG and PENGASSAN, the two major unions in the oil and gas sector had on Friday, endorsed the removal of petrol subsidy by the federal government.

Asked during yesterday’s briefing if NUPENG had changed its position on the endorsement, the union’s president, Olabode Johnson, said NUPENG was yet to harmonise with the NLC and TUC.

NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, said NLC, TUC and other civil society allies were not unaware of the positions taken by the unions in the oil and Gas Industry but added that a process of engagement would be put in place in order to ensure the success of the struggle to protect the overall interest of the Nigerian people.”

Speaking further, Wabba urged the federal government to revert to the old price regime in order to reduce the suffering of the people and added that in the event that government fails to accede to these demands on or before 12 midnight on Tuesday, May17, 2016, the labour will with effect from Wednesday, May 18, 2016 among others,

“Commence indefinite nationwide strike action.”

Also yesterday in Lagos, the Joe Ajaero faction of the NLC at an emergency CWC meeting called on the federal government to as a matter of urgency reverse the fuel price before midnight on Tuesday May 17, 2016, failing which the economy would be shut down.

A communique issued at the end of the meeting urged the federal Government to convoke a meeting of all relevant stakeholders if it is desirous of taking any action in the industry with far reaching consequences on the citizenry., saying, “government must engage the core stakeholders including the leadership of the industrial Unions in the Oil and Gas sector and the NLC that represents them.”

Since Lagos State is not championing the course I think it's will be difficult for NLC and TUC to stage a massive protest. Where is Fayose and the twitter minister when the opposition need them most. Fayose should mobilize crowd and let Murray broadcast the carnival cos am sure AIT will not attempt it.

If I can give PDP 16 years to show their skill while can't I be calm with APC for 4 years.

The National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE) said on Saturday it would stand strongly in support of the federal government’s resolve to fully deregulate the downstream sector of the Nigerian oil and gas industry.
The declaration of support by the aircraft pilots and engineers came barely few hours after the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC; Trade Union Congress, TUC and their affiliates and allies in the civil society issued a 96-hour ultimatum to government to rescind the decision or face the wrath of their members.
NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, told reporters in Abuja that the policy, which resulted in the hike in petrol price from N86.50 per litre to N145, was rejected because it was “unrealistic, unaffordable, and unacceptable.”
But, NAAPE, in a contrasting opinion, described the deregulation policy as a step in the right direction, pointing out that although it was long overdue, it was better late than never.
National President, Isaac Balami, who commended the government for the bold decision, said the subsidy scheme was extremely fraud-prone, adding that trying to reform the process was like “attempting to reform Satan (devil) – an impossibility task”.
“Our advice to the government is to use the money that will be saved to put in place infrastructures that will create jobs for Nigerians; ensuring that our refineries are working optimally, and encouraging local production to ameliorate the temporary hardship the citizen are going through,” Mr. Balami said.
He said the operators in the aviation industry, government must begin the refining of the aviation fuel, popularly called Jet A1 from the Kaduna and Port Harcourt refineries, to help reduce the costs of operation and flight tickets, since fuel alone constituted about 30 to 40 per cent of operational cost.
Mr. Balami said government should also look into the issue of establishing a national carrier as promised or strengthen the local domestic carriers as soon as possible, as the industry was currently at a standstill.

May I know what you stand to benefit from the hike in fuel price?

Or could it be that you have never bought fuel with your money before?

Yes! divide them and rule them. the government is always a mafia. Btw if Subsidy is in the best overall interest of the country then they should carry on with the removal of subsidy and forget this petty sentiment about gej trying to do it but was resisted. afterall all the while the official price was 86 naira I never got fuel for 86 naira. the least I ever bought fuel was 110. The least!

Alas! Nigerians are tired of following serial losers called NLC to any battle. The last struggle was supposed to be one we used to 'occupy' till we won even the future for the masses. We are no longer stupid to be following 'workers' who are even the ones aiding corrupt officials. Chai! NLC polar bear is dead, but it corpse is just standing in the snow-fresh and un-decayed. They lost the battle when they betrayed us years ago at Ojota and other places. You can go on strike...but we shall keep moving. Goodnight NLC...sleep tight and snore.

I knew this is will happen.
NLC, TUC and the civil society have been working with the APC during the PDP regime.

As at that time the APC sponsored much of their actions against the government.

Now that the APC is ruling the civil society is silent and labor unions divided, because most of them are APC members.
