Olorun is the Yoruba word for God, and it literally translates to ‘Owner of Heaven’. Alaafin is the title of the Oba/King of Oyo, and it translates literally to ‘Owner of the palace’. The Alaafin is the political head of the Yoruba people. In the Bible, Jerusalem itself, the city of Jerusalem is the House/Temple of God, therefore during the time when God dwelt in Jerusalem (until 606BC), Jerusalem was Heaven or ‘Orun’. Adopting the title ‘Alaafin’ for its political/military head seems to suggest that the Yoruba people are quite aware that the owner of the ‘Aafin’, is also the owner of ‘Orun’. This buttresses the notion of anthropomorphism and the concept of god-men; men endowed with the abilities that set them apart from ordinary mortal men, in fact, the kings were the gods.
