FEC Okays Dangote For Lokoja-ilorin Road Construction by Caseless: 3:52am On May 21, 2016
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday approved the proposal for business mogul, Aliko Dangote, to construct Lokoja-Obajana-Ilorin Road.
Dangote Cement’s Obajana factory is located along that axis.

In return, Dangote will hold back 30 percent of his company’s income tax for some years.
‎The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, disclosed this to State House correspondents at the end of FEC meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.

He was accompanied by the Ministers of Information, Lai Mohammed; Labour, Chris Ngige and Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.
He said: “We presented a memo to council for consideration. The memo seeks to take benefits of the existing policy and regulation. It seeks to take benefits of tax policies, tax laws for the purpose of using them to drive infrastructural development renewal.

“So we presented a proposal by one of the subsidiary of Dangote group, a construction company, for the construction of a section of Lokoja-Obajana-Kabba-Ilorin, specifically the section between Obajana-Kabba Road using cement as demonstrative of how perhaps we should continue to build going forward in order to reduce maintenance on the road and the company proposing to fund the construction of that section of the road in exchange for some tax remissions.

“Companies are ordinarily suppose to pay income tax‎. There are existing policies in our laws which enable government to consider and give taxes incentives.
“So Council consider and approved the proposal for Dangote construction company to build that section of the road because the tonnage of cement being produced from the factory has increased and the traffic in that area has increased, there had been unfortunate accidents also.

“So it is a total economy policy which council considered and approved because it gives support to industry, it enables us take benefit of our tax law to renew infrastructure at a time we are really challenged for resources to finance all our routes. It also enables us to save lives by quickly and urgently rebuilding that road so that other commuters who also depend on that road for their livelihood would also benefit from the road.”

Good gesture!
But Dangote should not see himself as doing the FG or the people any favour. Afterall, He's holding back 30% tax for some years. Who knows if the 30% tax he's holding back will not be more than what he's going to spend on the road.

And plus he needs to give back to the country that made him what he is, it is called SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY OF A BUSINESS.

In business, you have to give back to the community that allows you to thrive well and that's just what the FG is trying to achieve here.

if paid normally, dangote's taxes would be used to provide services all over the nation.

with this arrangement, only the residents of the project area benefit directly from government expenditure of tax revenue.
i hope the egg heads who approved this deal are also taking steps to redress the lopsided expenditure.

Good strategy but on the govt side, they should enquire how much it will cost dangote to do the road oh,and not lazily rely on what his company tells us. Else he'll end up paying only 30% of his income tax for the next 500yrs.
Good strategy once again.
Re: FEC Okays Dangote For Lokoja-ilorin Road Construction by Nobody: 4:25am On May 21, 2016
kind of arrangement that make sense, have always respect fashola but mean while FG should give the specification by providing all the requirements like speed limit, emergency lanes, packing space and road side emergency location, all demarcations and bus terminus, lets do it once and for all, the road could me a source of revenue too. Proper estimation should also be done by the experts in the works ministry then we can tell for sure how long Dangote will hold tax. Transparency and accountability. God bless all those who make it an effort to ease the suffering of the masses. God bless Nigeria.

THIS IS GROSS ILLEGALITY .
THIS IS A VERY DULL LAZY AND CORRUPT MOVE BY A SO CALLED FG.
WHAT HAS BECOME OF DUE PROCESS OF BIDDING FOR GOVERNMENT CONTRACTS THAT ENSURES THAT THE MOST COMPETENT ROUTE IS SELECTED FOR ANY JOB?
IS THIS GOVERNMENT OUT SOURCING THE MINISTRY OF WORKS?
IS BUHARI ON A MISSION TO FUTHER EMPOWER DANGOTE AS ABACHA DID BY GIVING HIM THE SOLE LICENSE TO IMPORT SALT SUGAR AND RICE AT THE CHAGRIN OF OTHER CITIZENS RIGHT TO ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT?
DANGOTE SHOULD EIGTHER PAY ITS TAX AND MINISTRY OF WORK DO ITS CONSTITUTIONAL DUTY OR CHOOSE TO BE SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE AND GIVE BACK TO SOCIETY FREELY...
SHAME ON ALL THOSE BLINDED BY POVERTY AND LACK OF TACT..
IF THE MINISTRY OF WORKS UNDER THE CHANGE IS AS INCOMPETENT AS THE FG IS MANIFESTING THEN RESIGNATION IS A NOBLE OPTION FOR ALL CONCERNED.

Whatever will give that road a proper shape is well appreciated. At least we can expect to see a significant drop in transport expenses.

N1000 for a short distance like Kabba - Lokoja is totally uncalled for!

Once the road is completed, any motorist caught demanding fees as high as N400 from Kabba to Lokoja should be arrested. I used to cover same distance in Delta for as low as N200.

The Ministry will not do the work, so let's appreciate this. We've being discussing this project since Yar'adua days yet nothing has been done.

Dangote is a businessman, and he needs that road to boost his sales. On completion, we expect to see free movement of trailers, etc.

This project should further reveal the poor performance of the stup!d Senator who turned Ilorin puppet - Senator Smart Adeyemi.

His attempts failed for 8 years. Jonathan constructed more roads than any Nigerian President (says Fashola), yet Senator Smart Adeyemi - the Kogi born - turn - Ilorin Senator and Hotel Management consultant in Kwara could not successfully get this road constructed.

Senator Smart Adeyemi is a failure, a disgrace, and a shame upon his family and his generation. I expect the good people of Kogi West Senatorial district to ban him from Kogi and seize his assets in town, including his uncompleted family house in Iyara.

Unfortunately, the so called good people of the senatorial district have once again elected another Saraki-Ilorin puppet to further propagate and elongate the ineptitude, emptiness and failures of Smart Adeyemi. They felt the PDP blood with Smart Adeyemi was the problem, so they voted the APC dimwit - Dino Melaye. Little did they know that Smart had it all planned out to join APC.

Overall, I appreciate this gesture from Aliko Dangote. He's more valuable than any Kogi Governor or Senator from Igala, Okun or Ebira kingdom. For the records, all the Past governors and senators (put together) are yet to create just a quarter of jobs Dangote has created through the cement factory in Obajana. When the aim is to create ghost workers, our brothers from Igala are 'expert expatriates.'

The so called Hausa man has done what no indigenous wealthy person has done; most of whom are even ashamed and shy to associate with their "people".

These are my views as a blunt realist

A kind of Bypass Spending. That it might not amount to manipulation and misappropriation of Funds in Consolidated Revenue Fund Account, the NASS and not the FEC is to authorize and certify the 30 percent tax viament. The FEC recommends, the NASS authorizes and certifies and the Presidency approves. This is the rule of engagement in good management and democracy.

If paid normally Dangote 's taxes won't be used to provide services all over the nation, it will be pocked by a corrupt govt official or politician at least dis way something gets done plus who to u he pays taxes b4.

Recently FIRS said big corporation don't pay their taxes by bribing officials, globacom lagos office was closed down a couple of wks ago for 24bn worth of tax, so was Nicon luxury and Nicon Insurance for 60bn over the past 10yrs

You can keep casting aspersions against your kit and kin and also You reserve the right to your views and sentiments, but be objective enough to understand that they may not be the ideal.

As you have claimed here a lot roads roads where awarded and built under GEJ and the ministry responsible for this is the MINISTRY OF WORKS so you are wrong to say the same ministry will not build or oversee the construction of the said road. Due Process and the right thing must be done, it is wrong for DANGOTE to award a federal roads contract to itself and expected to deduct same from his tax you can be sure he will short change the government to his own gain I mean he is after all a businessman.

DANGOTE can use his exposure and influence to easily lobby the passage of a bill to rehabilitate the said road regardless of the representing senator this is the right way to go.

If he had paid tax it would first gone into federation's purse, then assigned to specific project it part of it does get padded into constituency 'virtual' projects. This process is open to corruption more than if the lets him fix it to standard that permits frequent cement truck usage.

Why do some of you just make senseless comments? If Dangote pays his tax and the road remains in a bad state, you'll complain. The road will not only be benefial to him (which will be constructed to stand the high tons of cement carried by trucks that will pass on it) but also the other road users.

This gesture should be extended to Papalanto Road between Ifo and Sagamu LGAs in Ogun State. Cement produced by Dangote in Ibesse, Ogun State are conveyed by trucks on the road.

Dangote deserves outright tax waivers from the Nigerian government.

In this same month, he gave the Borno state govt 2 billion Naira to aid the living conditions of IDPs.

We the good people of Kogi state are not criminals; we do not carry arms, blow up cement factories and kill innocent people in the hope to get amnesty. So since the "egg heads" have thought it wise to build our roads, SO BE IT.

Shell, and the likes have done much more in the Niger Delta area.

Government corruption masked behind seeming social responsibility is one thing and Tax waiver is another.

Tax waiver on the grounds on philanthropism is the height of irresponsibility and dullness of government. Dangote has his selfish reason for giving to idp in borno what about the idp in agatu and plateau and Enugu? The most he deserves is traditional title from the borno people

If Dangote is you hero please keep you feelings out of objective and formal discuss.

You all need to stop dragging the society backwards with your whims and fancy! Enough already.

You don't understand what is being discussed here. The oil marketers whose trucks ply Refinery Road, Effurun, should, like Dangote, be made to repair the road. The Ekpan section is very bad.

I think NL Politics Section is becoming a Tribal Battle-ground!
The Mods should act fast, and accordingly, before this section loses its values! Sometimes I prefer spending good time at the Sport Section to avoid reading "Trash" and "Gibberish" that are known to this Section these Days!
You will be "wowed" with the ways arguments or critiques are presented in the Sport section - stats are always presented to back the points!
Enough of child-play! Let's grow up pls!
