Do you know the US nuclear weapons force uses a 1970s-era computer system and floppy disk? You don't believe right? Well its definitely true. This was contained in an official government report

The Accountability Office of the United States government said the Pentagon remain one of several departments where ageing systems which are termed "legacy systems" needed to be replaced with urgency.

The report revealed that taxpayers spent $61bn (£41bn) a year on maintaining ageing technologies which cost three times more than the cost of maintaining modern IT systems.

It further disclosed that systems used by the Department of Defence, United States, the agency that co-ordinate the use of the country's intercontinental ballistic missiles, nuclear bombers and tanker support aircraft "runs on an IBM Series-1 Computer - a 1970s computing system - and uses eight-inch floppy disks". "This system remains in use because, in short, it still works". "However, to address obsolescence concerns, the floppy drives are scheduled to be replaced with secure digital devices by the end of 2017." "Modernisation across the entire Nuclear Command, Control, and Communications enterprise remains ongoing," Pentagon spokeswoman, Lt Co Valerie Henderson, was quoted by AFP news agency.
