Reps to investigate alleged killing of unarmed civilians in South East


The House of Representatives on Thursday mandated its Committee on Human Rights, National Security and Intelligence, to investigate the alleged killing of unarmed civilians in the South East on May 30.

The House also urged the Federal Government to review and formulate a more efficient mechanism for engaging with aggrieved persons that threaten the country’s security and territorial integrity.

The resolution emanated from a motion moved under Matters of Urgent Public Importance by the Deputy Minority Leader, Rep. Chukwuma Onyema (PDP-Anambra), and unanimously adopted by the House.

Onyema said the spate of extra judicial killings by security agencies was increasing in the country.
The lawmaker said the rights to freedom of association, expression and peaceful assembly were enshrined in the constitution.

According to him, the country’s dismal human rights records are largely predicated on unprovoked and forceful engagements by security agencies on unarmed civilians.
“The rule of law and respect for rights of citizens are cardinal ingredients for the survival of our democracy and consolidation on our democratic gains’’, Onyema said.

He held that if the high handed engagement and extra judicial killings were not checked, they could lead to escalation of confrontational tendencies and resistance to state.
The Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, therefore, mandated the committees to investigate the matter and report back within two weeks.

Let's be watching as the investigation begins

This government wastes too much time, start the investigation already and stop using future-impossible tense.

Since this is a fact, why then will the military under buhari shoot at unarmed persons as was the case with the shiites in zaria and ipob in the southern parts of Nigeria...

All these point to Nigeria being governed by hoodlums who don't give a frig about the constitution... how then can Nigerians be proud to say they are practicing democracy when the rule of law is not being adhered to

As if their investigation will amount to anytn.

Some persons would wish this move be ditched. they would be wishing the senator death in their dark mind. these people hate IPOB with passion especially now it seem like they are winning the war and gaining more sympathisers both locally and internationally.

I hope the security personnels responsible for the dastardly and cowardly act, who can not face bokoharam but always vent their frustrations on innocent unarmed civilians be made to face the full weight of the law.

Good move at least in a democracy. Let d Army present evidence to justify how they killed in retaliation.

As far as I'm concerned those killed are Terrorists who engaged the military in a gun battle because they want a useless biafra. How are they unarmed citizens

Good move because Apc and there supporters are doing as if the are on Revenge mission the are ready to destroy anybody that oppose them

This once don't even know there power, invite the minister of defence and if u are not convinced with his explanation send him to prison without trial (they have the power)

A little too late,govt is never supposed to be reminded in cases like this
