A three-week lay-off for Arsenal captain Francesc Fabregas could see Arsene Wenger emerge as an active manager within the transfer market, as the Daily Mail is reporting that the French boss is eager to cement his interest in Saint-Etienne star midfielder Blaise Matuidi.

Even by Wenger's own standards, the current window has been one characterised by inactivity. The sole notable recruit to sign for the Gunners this summer remains £10 million-rated defender Thomas Vermaelen, bought from Ajax.

The Belgian international has taken little time in settling into life at the Emirates Stadium, as he is proving to be an inspired purchase due to his canny break-up play, his penchant for interception, his man-marking and also his heading ability, which seems to belie his size.
