Are Nigerians Really Ready For Online Dating. by Nobody: 6:38pm On Jun 04, 2016
Hello nairalander, just recently signed in to my nairaland account after almost 2years. I decided to put this topic up. Had a conversation recently with a couple of friends who concluded that we aren't ready, will give reasons shortly.

The internet is the new age, social media is now one of the best ways to market and sell any product or service. With this in lieu ,one of the friends spoken about above decided to start a online dating site where people could meet for dating and serious relationship purposes. After he did a research he discovered that there is a need for Online dating, living and working in Lagos can be hetic a lot of people don't have social lives, and for most guys it's easier for them to woo a lady online then physical (especially the shy once )

The result, he signed up a hand full of sincere and honest ladies , some students and working class ladies doing quiet well driving brand new cars et al,and am saying this because he went the extra mile to meet them personally before signing them up, of course it was a paid service to join the website. Anyway he meet a couple of geniue people looking for love. For the guys a lot of them wanted sugar mommies, some where already married and looking for girlfriends on the side, more negative than positive in a nut shell, he eventually had to shut down the site.

In my opinion, it's a mindset thing , if we don't change our mind set we will never be ready for it. Africans believe people that put there self out there are, needy and desperate or even scammers. We believe anyone looking for love online is a woman of easy vitue and the whole world will sleep with her.Men see them as easy pare.

In developed contries they understand that people are busy with work or studies or are just anti social, and online dating is the best option for them to meet people, but we African don't see it like that , hence the mindset I mentioned above. I have read some posts online about ladies and even guys looking for there other half, for the ladies here on nairaland they get a lot of negative comments and insults .

Things like they will just sleep with you, shine your eye, you are ugly, or guys just dropping there number and saying call me. For the guys it's not even a real post they say nothing about them selves except maybe age and location , and leave a number for any single lady out there too call, just plain disrespecting of you ask me, almost like your saying call me let me help your conditon .

Would love to see feed back about your own opinions or experiences. This is a large market and a lucrative buisness if only we can just get it together.

the one that baffles me is chatting with someone, just for a day and she start demanding for voucher. our motive towards anything online is just the problem.

I believe online dating is okay but has been so abused by Nigerians...just like the Op said. It depends on both parties involved, are they being genuine about it? I met my BF through nairaland&we are doing great
