More illegals set to flood SA

23/11/2006 21:13

Johannesburg - South Africa is home to as many as 10 million illegal immigrants and must brace for a flood of new arrivals as its booming economy leaves poorer neighbouring nations behind, according to an employment report published on Thursday.
The study, commissioned by the Uasa trade union, said projects linked to South Africa's hosting of the 2010 Soccer World Cup would provide incentives for new illegals.

"It's definitely a staggering number and more are bound to cross the borders, attracted by the prospects of 2010 and beyond," said economist Mike Schussler of financial services group T-Sec, who wrote the report.

"An average South African is six times better off than an average Zimbabwean and twenty times better off than an Malawian, so that draws people,"

But Schussler said the widespread view in South Africa that illegal immigrants took jobs away from locals was overstated, with research indicating that one in five immigrants created their own job in a boost for the national economy.

Increasing xenophobia

"Yes, some of them are involved in criminal activities.

"But South Africa has attracted skilled immigrants as well - some start their own informal businesses and are not as much of a burden to the social system as believed."

South Africa's unemployment rate, estimated by some economists as high as 40%, is a political issue for the ruling African National Congress and analysts say the country is growing increasingly xenophobic as more foreigners arrive.

South Africa deported nearly 210 000 illegal aliens last year, mostly to neighbouring Zimbabwe which is in the grip of an economic meltdown and political crisis, the research found.

Economists believe as many as 3.5 million Zimbabweans have sought to leave the country, with most headed for South Africa but others going to Britain or the United States.

'SA has become like the US'

Uasa officials said the government needed to address the Zimbabwean situation urgently to reverse the influx of immigrants - something President Thabo Mbeki's government has been reluctant to do so far.

"At present, fewer than 1.2 million Zimbabweans are (formally) employed in their country. There are more Zimbabweans employed in South Africa than in Zimbabwe," said Koos Bezuidenhout, chief executive of Uasa.

Zimbabwe's economy has been shrinking for six consecutive years with inflation reaching a world record of 1 070% and jobless rate of 80%.

But Schussler said the positives of having so many illegal immigrants far outweighed the negatives for South Africa.

"America was built by immigrants, and South Africa has become like the United States of Africa," said Schussler, adding that immigrants often had the very skills that South Africa was losing as its own skilled emigrants head for Australia, Europe or the United States

PS:BEWARE SOUTH AFRICANS DON´T LIKE OTHER AFRICANS AT ALL! I VISITED MANY FORUMS!!! THEY CONSIDER THE REST OF AFRICA AS "STUPID" AND "ADDICTED TO CRIME"

ROLMAO, I suppose NTA, AIT are the biggest networks in Africa since the people who run these corporations probably do not recognise South Africa as being part of the African continent, it will probably take them years to catch up to what corporates are doing here like watching satellite tv channels on your cellphone.

BTW, Merry Christmas folks!!

3) HIGHEST CRIME RATE IN THE WORLD

4) HIGHEST UNEMPLOYMENT IN THE WORLD

5) DAY-LIGHT BANK ROBBERY AT EASE.

I think you're exagerating a bit, I can't remember the last time that 500 people got fried to death for attempting to steal crude oil from a pipeline.

Dunno about the last time someone actually robbed a bank, FYI most heists happen on national roads while cash is being transported, and most of the criminals committing these crimes are not South Africans but illegal aliens. Search for "Ananias Mathe" and you'll get what I mean.

Dunno about us having the highest unemployment rate in the world but if there were no jobs here we wouldn't have more than 10 million illegal aliens flooding our borders. Have you thought about Zimbabwe? What's the official unemployment rate in Naija? In SA it's around 35% give or take.

Exagerate?

So they don't robb bank in daylight in Sati?

Police corruption nko?

Those 10million are stupid, i tell you.

In 1994,the year they gained independence. Visa agents started running up and down in Ibadan. My friend with good job fell for it, left a good job to go to J'bourg, he end up selling Pop-corn.

Have you even been here? Because you're sounding ridiculous, you make it sound as if Joburg is some Wild West frontier town, I'll admit it's not one of the safest cities in the world but "daylight" bank robberies are unheard of and no robber is stupid enough to rob a bank coz he'll only end up a blood-spattered corpse in the road.

Dunno about any Nigerian selling pop-corn, the ones I've met are far too proud and would rather hustle whether legally or illegally then do something degrading as sell pop corn, most of the Nigerians living here are doing quite well for themselves.

Firearms and Violent Crime in South Africa

Published in Nedbank ISS Crime Index
Volume 3 1999
Number 1, January - February

Firearms play an important role in violent crime in South Africa. In many of these crimes, criminals use firearms as an instrument to force their will on their victims. The relationship between availability of firearms and their use in crime becomes clearer when one looks at different categories of violent crime, namely, bank robberies, hijacking vehicles, cash-in-transit robberies, and the spate of attacks on farms and small-holdings.
Armed bank robberies

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), a total of 584 bank robberies were reported nationally between January 1997 and March 1998. The provinces of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal accounted for 58% of all South African bank robberies. These two provinces are singled out as they are the main financial provinces, more densely populated than the other provinces in the country and have high unemployment and crime rates.

Handguns are the favoured firearm used by criminals in the robbery of banks or financial institutions because they are easily concealed and light-weight (Figure 1). AK-47 assault rifles were used in 6.5% of reported robberies, while hand-grenades were used in 6.1% of reported robberies. In 3.1% of robberies shotguns were used. In 7.8% of reported robberies, the victim was handed a note of instruction without any armed hold-up occurring.
Hijacking of vehicles

The hijacking of motor vehicles in South Africa occurs daily and remains one of its violent crimes. Hijackers appear to attach a low value to the lives of humans and do not hesitate to kill their victims if they detect resistance. A total of 13 011 hijackings were reported to the SAPS during 1997, an increase of 1.2% over the previous year.

The trend seems to be continuing, between January and March 1998 a total of 7 073 vehicles were reported hijacked, an increase of 10.6% over the same period the previous year. Across all provinces, except the Free State, there was an increase in the occurrence of vehicles hijackings. Gauteng remains the province with the highest incidence of hijacking, followed by KwaZulu-Natal.

Firearms were used in the majority of reported hijackings. Within KwaZulu-Natal, for example, 87 percent of vehicle hijackings were committed with firearms. Similar to bank robberies, handguns are most frequently used.

Cash-in-transit robberies

The theft of cash-in-transit is a form of armed robbery. Due to its violent nature and the prominent media attention it receives, it has been declared a priority crime by the SAPS. As such, the SAPS give it specialised attention and channel resources towards investigating and preventing it.

In most of cash-in-transit robberies assault rifles (e.g. the AK-47, R4 and R5) are used. This differs fundamentally to those who commit hijackings and bank robberies, who tend to use hand-held firearms. One of the distinguishing factors of these types of robberies is that the level of concealment is low, making the nature of cash-in-transit robberies in South Africa interesting: the display of force is overt, there is little attempt by the culprits to minimise the public witnessing of these incidents, and rifles as opposed to handguns are used. Of these, automatic rifles are the preferred weapons as they have a relatively greater firepower.
Attacks on farms and smallholdings

The preliminary figures for 1998 indicate an increase in the number of attacks on farms and smallholdings reported to the SAPS, with a relatively larger increase in the attacks reported in Gauteng and the Eastern Cape. During 1997 there were 443 attacks reported which resulted in 84 deaths, while in the first period of 1998 there were 364 attacks with 65 deaths.

In most of the incidences reported, the farmers were ambushed before entering their properties. In 1997, 66.1% of attacks on farms or smallholdings were committed with firearms. Police statistics show that handguns are the favoured firearm of attackers. In only 10 cases was an assault rifle used.
Conclusion

The wide availability of firearms to commit crime is a major contributory factor leading to the increase of gun-related crimes in South Africa. As long as criminals have easy access to firearms and the community’s faith in its police and justice systems remain low, citizens will continue to arm themselves in defence.

Ways need to be developed to stop the availability of firearms both to the criminals and to the law-abiding citizens so that the incidence of violent crimes is minimised. This can only be achieved with stricter legislation and controls on firearms and ammunition, underway at the government level, and the effective enforcement and policing of such new legislation.

This is another stupidity from Africans. Why making argument out of nothing. Yes the police statistcs have shown that most people who cimmit crime in South Africa are illegal immigrants. I do not hate other African brothers and have got Nigerian friends whom I buy Nigerian movies from, but if you come to the filthy parts of Joburg you will expericnce selling of drugs by the Nigerian brothers and those are the ones that I want to see out fo our beutiful country. I do not care if you are a South African or not but if you do crime you are bad.

When are we as Africans gonna recognisze our strenght and support one another? Why do we have beef against one another? Why can't we advice each other to build a kingdom of the world economy?

hi, are you SA? well then that would explain your post. i have a Zimbabwean friend her mum is a minister in Zimbabwe and she was telling me if not for the illegal immigrants in SA parts of your economy would crumble.  Becos as she said many SA are uneducated and depend on little handout or just steal , rob and kill. The proportion of the so called illegal you say selling drugs are nothing compared to the many young SA males running the streets , gun toting and harrassing  tourists.  Many are gangbangers and have taken the American ghetto mayhem way of life as a lifestyle choice.

I know as immigrants legal or otherwise, if you decide to go to another's country you got to respect the laws or get the hell out, I am all for that. I hate scroungers and i am all for if you visit another's house don't go shit on it.
I think SA's should address their economic Apartheid and stop blaming the migrants who work hard for that same economy . Not knocking your ppl just like i will criticise Nigerians for their own madness i think you should face the truth, emotions aside.

Did you read the date on that report before you decided to post it because contextually it's incorrect, The latest crime stats for South Africa are released around September every year, use Google and search my brother.

Just to make Nigerians feel better about their country I'll say that we've got a spiraling crime rate and generally lawlessness reigns supreme grin And if you go to any jail you'll find an assortment of crooks from Nigerian fraudsters/drug dealers to Zimbabwean/Mozambican armed robbers and South African rapists.

In spite of all this South Africans are not knocking on the doors of other African countries begging to be let it, I'm still to meet anyone here who wants to permanently live in another African country.

South Africa's economy does not rely on the sweat of anyone but South African citizens, those people who your friends mom talks about are taking the crumbs off the table, they work as security guards and pizza delivery boys where they are paid a pittance, sometimes less than $200 US/month, don't know anyone in South Africa who would work for that money especially in the three big cities.

This part does not make a lot of sense but I'll suggest you check out the Stats SA homepage which should give you clear picture of what's happening in South Africa with raw numbers that should keep you up throughout the night.

BTW, Happy New Year to everyone in Naija and the African continent in general cool

Preaching south africa all the way.

I withdrew what i initially typed because i want you to feel at home in Nairaland.

1) Do you mean $200 or 200 rands?

2) Some Nigerians may be Drug dealers in your jail but the same country that breed them gave the biggest contribution towards your Independence.
Which Country produced one of the highest Medical personnel working in your country.

3) Who told you people want to settle in SA? where there is BOtswana, Ghana and Tunisia.

[li]It's the South African equivalent of US Dollars, about R1400/month equals about $200[/li]

[li]Dunno about Nigerians freeing my black ass in the 80s when we were living under the yoke of oppression. Where were all these Nigerians who claim to have supported us? I think all the Nigerians should ask for a refund because your money was stolen from you under the guise of supporting South Africans.[/li]

[li]Now if only all the areaboys who have settled here could go off to Botswana/Tunisia/Ghana, it would certainly make a dent in the crime stats, especially in Hillbrow which is an inner city area of Joburg. [/li]
