The creeks as we have been made to know in Nigeria is the fortified base of militants and not the dictionary meaning. The creeks of the Niger Delta region is what everyone knows for its violent notoriety.
The South-south region has claimed and confirmed by many had been abandoned by past governments who were interested in an ever swelling personal pocket. I have also had to cope with the tales of evil perpetrated by the previous government officials and oil companies in the Delta.
Nonetheless, these irregularities aren't an excuse for the show of shame by a morally decadent society. The youths of the Delta region have taken solace in the nonchalant attitude of the government and oil companies to continue behaving like rogues, hoodlums and the most popular term "militants". If you are a true Nigerian, you don't need to look up the dictionary for the meaning of militants. These guys have invented and at times imitated styles of causing trouble in the south-south region and these evil acts are numerous; ranging from the popular "pipeline vandalism" to "assassination". These teeming youths prefer the creeks to class room, guns to biro, smoking and drinking to spick and span life. Yet, many would allow them speak on behalf of a whole community - oozing out words of violence and chaos. Many of these youthful war lords are as rich as business men in Nigeria, a perfect lure to other youths in the region.
The heads of the families that produced these creek commandos can also not be absorbed from the blame, they are constantly seen consuming alcohol or spirit by the road side, at times almost paralysed while drinking. The heads of the clans are also implicated as they maintain the perpetual stand of a Godfather.
The politicians have a bonfire of blames at their living room. They intermittently employ these drug addicts to feather the nests of their ambitions and afterwards turn them to assassins during their terms in office to assassinate their political rivals. For those that have a bigger selfish interest, they use them to attain regional and National recognition. I always say it is difficult to find a politician in the Delta region without a link to thuggery just as it is difficult to find a needle in a haystack.
I therefore conclude that the moral level in the south-south region is very low which is once again supported by the violence and killings during the last election.
One must always acknowledge the fact that the place is an oil-rich region that has been very vital to the Nigerian economy. However, this is not an excuse for immorality, thuggery and violence.
Therefore, the people of the niger Delta region need to take up the gauntlet and put an end to the criminality that has plagued the region and nearly destroyed its name.
