Depression is a feeling of severe despondency and dejection or low morale which lasts longer than several weeks and may include ideation of self-inflicted injury or suicide. Depression is confused by most people, everyone goes through time of feeling down and you may think you have depression but this may sound like over exaggeration. Unlike what most people think, depression is an illness and should be treated by a professional as soon as symptoms are discovered.
Symptoms of Depression.
Often depression is diagnosed with three prominent symptoms present. The most notable is low mood that depression causes. Many with depression have described it as hopeless, miserable, like frustration and this might last for weeks, months, rather than days. Low mood may leave the person quiet for several days, depression affect the person more significantly. This mood will change the behaviour of the person, it can also cause guilt feelings. Most times, people with depression will lost interest in things they loved doing before. They no longer wish to do their hobbies they once enjoyed doing, or not satisfied with the things they do. It is also common for them to loss appetite and this may lead to loss of weight. it is also common for those with depression to find it difficult to focus on their thoughts or concentrate. This can make it more difficult for them to make decision like they previously did.

Depression can affect the person's self esteem and self confidence. They may experience a drop in their self esteem. This may make them feel inadequate to family member and friends around them. This can lead to avoidance of people. Finally depression can at times lead to suicidal thoughts. It is good to have a mood diary to write down every mood to detect depression.
Treatments of Depression.
Like all illnesses, there are treatments for depression. It is best to discuss your thoughts with your doctor. They will be able to advice you on what course to take, and which would be the most suitable treatment. Most time when thinking about treatments of depression what comes to our mind is therapy. Therapy is a good option for mild or moderate depression. The most common and most often recommended is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).  It is a form of therapy that introduces strategies to challenge the negative thoughts behind depression.
Another method of treatment is the Interpersonal Therapy (IPT).
Rather than focusing on negative thoughts you have, IPT instead focuses on your relationship with the people around you and how this affects your depression. In moderate or more severe cases of depression, your doctor may suggest a prescription of antidepressant drugs. It usually takes 2 weeks to 1 month to take effect. Depression is a serious illness and it shouldn't be taken for granted. Once symptoms are noticed please do well to see a doctor.
