The federal government yesterday declared a state of emergency on tomatoes subsector in the country, saying that 80 per cent of tomatoes farms had been ravaged by a pest known as tuta absoluta.

The government noted that the action followed a scarcity of the commodity in the country which had led to an outrageous increase in the price where available, adding that a new tomatoes policy to address the current crisis was underway.

Minister of industry, trade and investment, Hajia Aisha Abubakar, told newsmen after a meeting with major stakeholders across the tomatoes value chain that comprised packagers, relevant government ministries and regulatory agencies, farmers and processors, that a technical committee that would draft the proposed policy would be inaugurated next week.

“This meeting was convened in response to the current scarcity of tomatoes in the country occasioned by the outbreak of the tomato moth, tuta absoluta.

“Our investors in the sector have also been upset about the CBN’s ban on foreign exchange allocation for the importation of tomato concentrate, a vital raw material for them.

“So, we all came together to chart a way forward. The major decision we have taken is to develop a tomato policy under our National Industrial Revolution Programme (NIRP).

“A technical committee that would work on the policy draft should take-off next week so that we would have an approved plan in place before the next tomatoes season,’’ she said.

The ground work (not paper work numbo jumbo) has been done by Kemi Adeosun and team, (that finance minister is my role model) and the economy will take a great acceleration in the coming months. God bless Nigeria.

However, i'm curious the state of emmergency will boost the supply of tomatoes or will FG invest in scientific research to find a lasting solution to d tomatoes pest.

This action is suppose to be taken by Agriculture minister but he does not know his work.

Give me Akinwumi Adesina and I will show you a competent minister of agriculture, if it was the present AFDB President, he would have take action long ago and we would have not experience this scarcity. But because this administration is slow in taking actions that will benefits the common man it has cost us a lot.

Hmmmm, bro.I don't think so, this is one of the national disasters that doesn't announce itself. if Adesina is the minister presently, I don't think he can savage this situation because he can't plant tomatoes and reap them within a month
Lastly, Adesina is good in agriculture sector especially in theory while Audu Ogbeh is a practical farmer.

They said GEJ was clueless, yet he had a competent hand to manage agriculture. Those who claim to be "clueful" are bumbling from DIY disaster to DIY disaster.

Very shameless bunch of people.
