Betraying Emotions - A short piece He could see the barricade of police vehicles in front from his front mirror. The men looked scary, armed to their teeth, but he had his heart at rest. The roadside was bushy and he knew they were far from any town. He couldn't try reversing; the men would only be too ecstatic to gun him down - and Nimi. She wasn't scared too, it wasn't on her face. They were hardened together, in flesh and bond. Since he picked her up four years before, she had been his closest companion. And, ironically, he was loving her. He didn't make it known but he knew he loved her. She was his Achilles heel but survival was key. He had calculated everything well and this was his biggest deal so far. He was pushing cocaine to over 50 world leaders. But here was the price. "Come down from your vehicle," the police speaker interrupted his thoughts. He stared at them and he smiled. He was the top of the crime world, they were being very careful, none had left his post. He was expected to walk down and surrender. Such grim thoughts. He would go with his former plan, the worst feeling was starting to sink into him. He looked at Nimi and smiled. She did too, her pretty face getting him mad. "Let's do it," he whispered. And she nodded. That was she - alway compliant. "I have a plan," he added. "Go down, drop your guns and place your hands over your head." Simple. She didn't object, she knew he had a plan. She loved him too but he never saw it. God. As her door clicked, they heard the cocking of guns and they shared a smile, hers - blissful: his - sad. She wondered why. She stepped out and dropped her guns, kicked them away and walked carefully. She was very close to them then and any smart move would put a bullet in her head. The men were totally focused on her, their guns aching to blaze. They looked mad and each man wanted to kill. Then, very slowly, she turned back. She saw him sniffing, he was holding back tears. She was stunned. He met her gaze and discreetly unlocked his side door. Survival was key, he knew. It all happened in a flash. He kicked his door open and dived towards the bush. Poised, still in air, he pushed the button in the bomb console in his right hand. And the sound deafened him. Nimi blew up into pieces before his eyes and the police automobiles caught fire. The reaction hit him hard and he found himself flung further into the bush. He broke his right arm but Nimi was dead. Along with the police men. He was on top of his game. The fire went higher and he sobbed. Nimi. I. Loved. You. But survival was key. His grey shirt was torn, his trousers dirty and tattered and a stick had pierced his left leg. But his left hand was safe - the suitcase was safe. Nimi died for something. He brought out a map from his pocket and started walking deep into the bush. He had to survive. "Sorry, Nimi. I love you." He whispered and the rapt air carried his words. His heart sank to the bottom and he left it there. He betrayed love. ***The End**** Feature quickly, please. Cc: Lalasticlala, Seun, Obinnau. 1 Like |
