Maritime University To Commence Academic Activities Soon – Naval Chief by centvin008(m): 10:25pm On Jun 28, 2016 |
The Nigerian Navy said on Tuesday that the naval Maritime University in Ibuza, Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta, would soon commence academic work. The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice-Adm. Ibok-Ete Ibas, made the disclosure when he visited the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Delta in Warri. Ibas said that the process of obtaining the required approval for already constructed institution was being concluded. The naval chief said the proposed university was initially conceived as a Navy College. Ibas explained that the university was established in order to close academic gap which had necessitated the Nigerian Navy sending its personnel abroad to acquire some special skills. ”The moment the Federal Executive Council (FEC) grants the approval to commence operations, the university will start academic activities. “It is true that the Navy is in the process of obtaining the necessary clearance to have it converted to a university that will serve the navy as well as members of the public. “You will recall that the Navy undertakes a lot of its courses abroad in some civil institutions. ”So what the Navy has done is to go into partnership with some foreign partners who will assist us in establishing a school that will cater for the needs of the Navy in some areas we are currently deficient. “The process of getting the university licence is still on-going, we are contacting all the relevant agencies of government for approval,” he said. Ibas also attributed the relative peace in the Niger Delta region in respect of insurgency to the dialogue approach adopted by various organs of the government. ”You will recall that different organs of government have been dialoguing with the militants concerned, while the military maintains its posture of ensuring that militant activities are curtailed. ”For us as the Navy, in peace and war times, our duty is to ensure we police the general maritime areas and ensure that legitimate business thrives,” he said. Those who brought up this news are mischievous, we know their aim. For the record, the school has been there for years and has always been used to train Naval personnel but it is only in the process of being converted to uni as the Naval Chief has said. It is not a Civil Institution;not meant for you and i except you are in the Nigerian Navy. Even if admissions are later open to civilian, you can’t use their certificate to work in Merchant Ships except you want to work with the Navy as one of their civilian staff with low pay. Merchant Ships and Naval Ships are diferent in design, configuration, etc. It’s same with Air Force that is why we have two distinct Aviation Institutions in Kaduna, one for Air Force personnel and one for civilian. I studied Marine Engineering at some point some years back and i have a full understanding of this 38 Likes 2 Shares |

Since there's a Naval Maritime University in Ibuza, delta state, another Maritime University should not and cannot be sited in Okerenkoko, also in Delta state. Amaechi pls bring the Nationa Maritime University to Rumuolumeni or Ogbogoro or preferably, Ogbakiri...All in Rivers. |

The Federal government has always has a reason to deploy military in the axis whereas the building in the 'maritime university' is just lying fallow and the Senate prefers the university be sited in Oron, so it makes perfect sense to convert the structure to a Battalion of the Nigerian military. If the navy takes it for use,it should have a capacity to promote peace and security in the Gbaramatu axis https://www.nairaland.com/3175717/military-cancels-pulo-shield-pls |
