Hello Nairalanders,

It is no more news that cases of building collapse are so rampant in Nigeria today that it has become something of serious concern to all. This is why this thread is started with a view to helping people make an informed decision when it has to do with project design and construction.
From my personal and practical experiences, some of the reasons for building collapse may include one or more of the following:

1. Poor Supervision
2. Integrity of Contractor
3. Clients Indiscretion
4. Bad Workmanship
5. Use of Quacks
6. Corruption
7. Poor Design
8. Soil Bearing Capacity

Lets hear additional comments from Nairalanders.

I have noticed that the nowadays bricks are not comparable with the ones of eighties. Builders must insist on getting stronger bricks even if the cost is higher.

In construction, supervision is key to the success of any project and any project that is not properly supervised is bound to fail.

To supervise means to be in charge and make sure everything is done correctly and safely. This is why the importance of a good site engineer or architect cannot be overemphasized because if anything goes wrong there will be problems on the project.

The primary responsibilities of the site engineer or architect among others include:

* The inspection of all materials to be used on site

* Ensuring that the drawings and specifications are strictly followed.

* Ensuring that time and materials are prudently managed for optimum results

* Managing artisans and make sure they work optimally e.t.c

To be continued........

From experience, it has been discovered that even the best of artisans cannot produce excellent workmanship without supervision.
