Like seriously Op, how can you say Lagos 'is not ready for this?? An already overpopulated city/state with an ever increasing population and transportation challenges, and you say it's 'not ready' and that it's a 'misplaced priority'?? If Lagos isn't ready then you might as well just simply say nowhere in Nigeria is ready for such development. So, according to you and in your infinite 'wisdom', when will Lagos be 'ready' for such infrastructural upgrade

Please ignore such comments.
A city of 25m that is growing by 600,000 people per year? Not ready?
Ethnic hatred and a party spirit have blinded many of today's young people. Pity them. Move on. Ignore.

Wait, Lagos is not ready for a nice looking train even though i am sure it is not the most advanced or expensive one(probably refurbished) in the market because...

Talk about having really low expectations !

LAGOS RAIL MASS TRANSIT

Introduction: The Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) network is a major component of the Strategic Transport Master Plan (STMP) which has been developed to guide as a compass for the development of public transport infrastructures in the State. The STMP is a 30 year plan put together under series of intensive researches, studies and analyses of future transportation demands and needs of Lagos State as Nigeria's commercial and economic hub and one of the world's fastest growing mega cities.

COMPONENT OF LURN

The Lagos Urban Rail Network (LURN) is a network of urban rail-based systems covering seven major corridors of high commuter traffic demand within and beyond the metropolitan Lagos extending to border areas with States like Ogun and Oyo.

The Urban Rail Network consists of seven (7) railway lines planned along priority and high commuter demand corridors within the Lagos metropolis and farther. The 7 lines link the major population and activity centres in the state, as well as taking advantage, where possible, of existing transport corridors. The network is fully integrated with planned and existing water transport and BRT routes. These lines are:

Blue Line - Okokomaiko to Marina
Red Line - Agbado to Marina via Iddo and Muritala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA)
The Blue and Red Lines are priority routes, which are already at advanced stages for immediate development.

Other routes for development are:

Green Line -Marina to Lekki (Airport)
Yellow Line -Otta to Iddo
Purple Line Redeem to Ojo
Orange Line- Redeem to Marina
Brown Line- Mile 12 to Marina

The North-South corridor between Agbado and Iddo along the Nigerian Railway corridor; the Eastern corridor to serve the emerging development along the Lekki to Epe axis; and the western corridor along the Mile2 - Okokomaiko axis.

Others are: Marina to Lekki axis, Redeem to Ojo, Otta to Iddo, Redeem to Marina and Mile 12 to Marina route. The seven corridors will be connected by a central ring road between Victoria Island and Lagos Island.

Blue Line Rail Project: The Blue Line is a 27 km rail road with thirteen stations from Okokomaiko to Marina. The Blue Line is undergoing construction right in the middle of Lagos-Badagry Expressway which government is currently expanding and redeveloping into a ten-lane international gateway. Apart from rail, the infrastructure design also includes provision for BRT and multimode integration with Non-Motorized Transport [NMT] such as pedestrian walkways and overhead bridges for safe access by passengers to rail and bus stations.

Work commenced in August 2009 for construction of the Blue Line rail infrastructure, awarded to China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC) as a design and build contract. CCECC prepared the detailed plan, design and construction works for the rail infrastructure. These works includes stations, roadbed, bridges, permanent way (P-way) tracks works, pedestrian ways and other associated fixed infrastructure.

All survey work, a proportion of the detailed design work and mobilisation of contractor was completed between August 2009 and August 2010. The fixed infrastructure is to be implemented in phases and actual construction work commenced with a ground breaking ceremony attended by His Excellency, Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola on 26th July 2010. Construction works are ongoing for the first phase section between National Theatre and Mile 2. The infrastructure for the first phase is expected to be completed within the first quarter of 2014 while operation would commence after the conclusion of negotiation with the concessionaire, which isexpected to provide the rolling stock, operate and manage the rail line

Proposed Trains: The types of trains proposed for the Blue Line Rail Project are Electric Multiple Units (EMUs). EMUs are emissions free and therefore do not pose problems of environmental pollution usually associated with conventional diesel locomotives. EMUs are proven to be more efficient and easier to maintain than diesel locomotives.

Initially, the Blue Line will carry 400,000 passengers daily with capacity increased to 700,000 passengers daily when the rail route becomes fully operational. To incorporate the use of EMUs, a depot including power generating plant has been proposed for construction at the final western most station, Okokomaiko. The depot will serve as train maintenance and repair yard, sidings, final train destination, office complex and power station.

The selected concessionaire will be responsible for providing rolling stock, operations and maintenance for a 25 year period. These include station operations, staffing, maintenance, ticketing, cleaning, information, services kiosk, centres and all other services needed to provide excellent train services for passengers.

Once the Blue Line becomes operational, rail public transport will be incorporated into the integrated ticketing and fare systems making travel between different modes a seamless operation. This seamless approach will also be applied to provision of information about other transport modes and time tables between different modes [BRT, LRT, Ferry, etc] at rail stations to enable precision journey planning.

Look at you still looking for excuses to justify the misinformation you typed earlier. Please answer me, how many Universities are in Lagos? 'And what is the % compared to the need in the entire state?' Yea, right. undecided SMH!

Let me answer you by asking how many TECHNICALLY trained and qualified:

- bricklayers
- carpenters
- painters
- refrigeration technicians
- wiring technicians
- etc

are needed to work with just one civil engineer on a building project.
What is the ratio of those being trained at the few viable technical schools vis-a-vis the engineering graduates from universities in Lagos state and all around Nigeria who flood into the state looking for employment?

Nice one. What's the maximum allowable speed of this train?

Reference:
Yeah, but how do you define light loads, how will the system be managed. Typically in aviation this is determined at check-in. They will tell you what cannot go in the overhead bin and what goes into the cargo-hold. You will be informed about what will not even be admitted on an aircraft at all. These are the activities that take up huge amounts of time, the haggling. But metro trains donot have the time for that. They are not booked in advance and operate on a first come, first serve basis. The checking comes at the turnstiles by metro officials either before or after ticketing. As a matter of fact some of the turnstiles are built to ensure you cannot gain access with baggage. Will this be implemented here.

Then the question of what you can bring on board, a couple of shopping bags from 'game/shoprite' or a dripping carton of fish from 'Oshodi market'. These are socio-cultural questions but are serious enough to affect the operation of the system.
The question is this, how does the BRT works presently which I think would naturally answer your questions concerning how effectively it would be run when fully operational. Like I said, it's going to be tailored the way BRT is being run presently which to me is fair for now barring our maintenance culture and as time goes on, it can be improved.

grin You know this country na. If you allow Mama Ronke to bring on board a dripping carton of croaker or you don't allow Abdullahi to bring his smoking kettle of 'shai' and Chinedu a greasy half engine block of Nissan Pathfinder 2003, guess what, the metro will be in court for....marginalization.

(pls. bear with the stereotyping)...
I know that, bro!

More like a quota system cheesy cheesy cheesy which is sad to say the least.

I know one day, when my children are being ask where are you from within Nigeria, they would be able to say simply, I'm a Nigerian before any tribe which they belong to.

If you see the scale of this project in Lagos, you'll realize that whatever you're talking about are toys compared to it.

Yeah, they must be toys for stealing money as Amaechi did in Port Harcourt before abandoning his white elephant project. A project he had been advised was not worthwhile from the get-go after the consultant was paid N23 billion! shocked

... To outer space.

ijekul:

As the Judicial Commission of Inquiry set up by the Rivers State Government to probe the sale of valued assets of the state and other matters continued its sitting on Friday, the technical consultant to the state on the monorail project, Arcus Gibbs revealed that  he advised former Governor Chibuike Amaechi against continuing with the project.

Managing Director of Arcus Gibbs Nig Ltd, Wiero Viguezang, however said his company gave the advice only after collecting N22.9bn from the Rivers State Government since its services were enlisted in March 1, 2010.

Viguezang spoke when he appeared before the commission to explain the role played by his company in the monorail project being probed by the commission.

While being cross-examined by counsel to the commission, Dr. Zaccheus Adangor, Viguezang, stated that the monorail project was no longer tenable considering the shortfall in the state’s revenue and the inability of its original technical and equity partners, TSI Nig Ltd, headed by the former military administrator of Rivers State, Brig-Gen Anthony Ukpo (Rtd.), to fulfil its obligations to contribute 80 per cent of its equity holdings.

He disclosed that the state owes his company N1.1bn for its services.
He also said the company had in a letter to the Rivers State through the ministry of transport, in April, made a six-point recommendation to the Rivers State on how to unbundle the monorail project in such a way that the state government can salvage some financial benefits out of the N33.9bn so far invested in the project. The monorail project was originally estimated to cost about Euros2250m.

The technical partner had in its sixth point of recommendation suggested to the Rivers State Government to unbundle the monorail project and approach the manufacturers of the mechanical components and rail tracks in Germany and exploit the possibility of reselling components at a lower price to the manufacturers.

He said the company also advised the state government to consider the option of using the monorail facilities for other commercially viable purposes, mentioning the spaces between pillars and surrounding areas of the monorail project, stressing that the area between Azikiwe Road and the UTC axis could be put into very fruitful commercial purpose.
Viguezang also told the commission that his company and the state government had planned to unveil the monorail project last April specifically to mislead the people of Rivers State into thinking that the project, which has gulped N33.9bn, was still on course.

He admitted that his company wrote a memo to the commissioner for transport to arrange the unveiling of the project essentially for media coverage since the project was “technically uncompleted”.

According to Viguezang, “We actually wrote to the ministry of transport in January, to arrange for the governor to unveil the monorail project in April for the attention and coverage of the media based on the expectation of the people of the state.”

When asked to clarify if the unveiling was to deceive the people of Rivers State into believing that the controversial monorail project was ready, Viguezang admitted; “It was to deceive the people into believing that the monorail project was at last ready”.

The managing director, however, stressed that “apart from the media coverage and public attention that it is expected to generate, the monorail was not technically and commercially ready. Only phase 1a within phase 1 of the project was ready. So, there was no way the public would have been able to use the monorail as at April when we asked the ministry of transport to unveil the project to the media”.

Viguezang admitted that the Rivers State government enlisted services of Arcus Gibbs at the cost of N600 million from March 1, 2010 to December 1, 2010, after the memorandum of understanding (MoU) with TSI collapsed because TSI could not raise revenue to fulfil the payment of its 80 per cent equity share capital.

He stated that part of its role as the technical service provider to the Rivers State government concerning the monorail project was to evaluate and assess the activities of TSI and give an independent opinion to the Rivers State government.
