The World Health Organization (WHO) has ranked Nigerian women as the most skin bleachers in the whole of Africa. No doubt because these days, it is not uncommon to walk past your classmate without recognizing them. The reason may not be far fetched. They might have bleached their skins.

Married women now compete with young girls because they are afraid of losing their husbands to fair young girls.

These are some health implications of skin bleaching. Mercury is a toxin found in bleaching creams. It causes cancer. Bleaching brings out rashes and unsightly blotches on the skin surface and weakens the skin so that it cannot be stitched when cut. If the chemicals are absorbed in the blood stream they can cause organ failure and brain damage. With all these, do you think bleaching creams should be banned in Nigeria?
