There are dozens of fundamental reasons why students don't choose mathematics as a course of study in the university. Looking at it from a student - parent point of view, the following four reasons is what I gathered in my children's open day.

1. Many parents discourage their wards believing Maths degree holders are boxed to teaching in the secondary schools.
2. Fear of Mathematics by the majority of students.
3. Compared with other subjects, mathematics is almost always badly taught, suffers incompetent teachers and hence poor student mentoring
4. There is usually no special recognition for maths teachers hence the best hands and minds have crossed to other lucrative sectors
