Chinese carrier enters South China Sea amid renewed tension

A group of Chinese warships led by the country's sole aircraft carrier entered the top half of the South China Sea on Monday after passing south of Taiwan, the self-ruled island's Defense Ministry said of what China has termed a routine exercise.

The move comes amid renewed tension over Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its own, ineligible for state-to-state relations, following U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's telephone call with the island's president that upset Beijing.

The Soviet-built Liaoning aircraft carrier has taken part in previous exercises, including some in the South China Sea, but China is years away from perfecting carrier operations similar to those the United States has practiced for decades.

Taiwan's Defense Ministry said the carrier, accompanied by five vessels, passed southeast of the Pratas Islands, which are controlled by Taiwan, heading southwest.

The carrier group earlier passed 90 nautical miles south of Taiwan's southernmost point via the Bashi Channel, between Taiwan and the Philippines.

"Staying vigilant and flexible has always been the normal method of maintaining airspace security," said ministry spokesman Chen Chung-chi, declining to say whether Taiwan fighter jets were scrambled or if submarines had been deployed.

Chen said the ministry was continuing to "monitor and grasp the situation".

Senior Taiwan opposition Nationalist lawmaker Johnny Chiang said the Liaoning exercise was China's signal to the United States that it has broken through the "first island chain", an area that includes Japan's Ryukyu Islands and Taiwan.

In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said people should not read too much into what the carrier was up to, as its movements were within the law.

"Our Liaoning should enjoy in accordance with the law freedom of navigation and overflight as set by international law, and we hope all sides can respect this right of China's," she told a daily news briefing.

Influential state-run Chinese tabloid the Global Times said the exercise showed how the carrier was improving its combat capabilities and that it should now sail even further afield.

"The Chinese fleet will cruise to the Eastern Pacific sooner or later. When China's aircraft carrier fleet appears in offshore areas of the U.S. one day, it will trigger intense thinking about maritime rules," the newspaper said in an editorial.

China has been angered recently by U.S. naval patrols near islands that China claims in the South China Sea. This month, a Chinese navy ship seized a U.S. underwater drone in the South China Sea. China later returned it.

Japan said late on Sunday it had spotted six Chinese naval vessels including the Liaoning traveling through the passage between Miyako and Okinawa and into the Pacific.
Japan's top government spokesman said on Monday the voyage showed China's expanding military capability and Japan was closely monitoring it.

China's air force conducted long-range drills this month above the East and South China Seas that rattled Japan and Taiwan. China said those exercises were also routine.

Last December, the defense ministry confirmed China was building a second aircraft carrier but its launch date is unclear. The aircraft carrier program is a state secret.

Beijing could build multiple aircraft carriers over the next 15 years, the Pentagon said in a report last year.

China claims most of the South China Sea through which about $5 trillion in ship-borne trade passes every year. Neighbors Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam also have claims.

Chinese military seems to have increased her drills. For the last two weeks, I have noticed an increase in Chinese Airforce passes. Over 12 today.

However, I don't think there will be war anytime soon.

Maybe in 2018/19 I don't think it will be next year, most likely 19.

There's money to be made from a war.

China can't sustain a war.

the worst China could do is to invade and occupy Taiwan. other than that it will need the help of the Russians to project a war against Japan .

nothing new,
india tested the same missile 2-3 times already since 2012

this one i think tested some precursor MIRV technology (speculation on my part and not reported anywhere) . India already has the capability as demonstrated by the civilian space launch of more than 20-80 satellites from a single rocket launcher. it only needs to be configured/optimized for military purpose .

DRDO ATAGS

Conceived and designed by the DRDO’s Armament R&grin Establishment, Pune (ARDE), the gun is mostly built by two private firms. The lion’s share has been won by Tata Power (Strategic Engineering Division), which has built one prototype. The Kalyani Group has built a second prototype.

Development of the ATAGS system has been divided into nine “work packages”, with each package competitively tendered within India. The Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) won the tender to manufacture gun barrels, along with forgings giant, the Kalyani Group.

Other private companies have won roles too. Mahindra Defence Systems will make the recoil system along with Tata Power SED, while Punj Lloyd will make the muzzle brake. During full-scale manufacture, an entire eco-system of smaller Tier-2 and Tier-3 suppliers is expected to come up.

155-millimetres is the “bore” of the gun, or the width of the gun barrel. Calibre relates to barrel length; the higher the calibre, the longer the barrel, and the longer its range. A third parameter is chamber size, which determines how large a projectile can be fired from the gun, and therefore how much damage a round can inflict on the target.

While most globally available 155-millimetre guns, including the French Nexter and Israeli Elbit guns the military has evaluated, have a chamber capacity of 23 litres, ATAGS will have a 25-litre chamber. That would let it fire more high explosive onto the target with each round.

The ATAGS is the world’s only towed gun with a six-round “automated magazine”, which lets it fire a six-round burst in just 30 seconds. Most other 155-mm, 52-calibre guns have three-round magazines, which must be reloaded after firing three rounds.

which means a battery of 18 guns will lob 108 rounds in just 30 seconds grin grin

Since most casualties are caused by artillery in the initial burst of fire, when enemy soldiers are caught in the open (and not after they dive into their trenches), a high “burst fire” capability is an important attribute.

The ATAGS specifications also require it to fire 60 rounds in 60 minutes in the “sustained fire” mode.

Another first in the ATAGS is its all-electric drive, which replaces the comparatively unreliable hydraulic drives in other towed guns. The ATAG’s all-electric drive operates its automated mechanisms: ammunition handling, opening and closing the breech, and ramming the round into the chamber.

it is still in development , more features/refinement r planned

army requirement is for around 2000 of these towed guns

Larsen & Toubro, an India-based multinational engaged in defense technologies development, engineering, and manufacturing, Air Defence Fire Control Radar System, or ADFCR system.

L&T new Air Defence Fire Control Radar system is a state-of-the art and compact system which allow the user to control the firing of two air defense guns.

The ADFCR radar system consists of a one three dimensional (3D) Surveillance Radar and one Tracking Radar systems, Electro Optical (EO) sensor for passive tracking, a Command & Control Station (including Weapon Control Unit) and an integral power supply system.

The 3D surveillance radar is a land-based version of Airbus' TRS-3D radar, offered in cooperation with its Indian partner L&T. The surveillanc radar is the Elta's ELM 2026B very short range air defence radar system.

The AFDCR is able to transmit data to MANPADs in a range of 8km over line and radio. The entire system is mounted on a single trailer in a modular configuration with its own captive power supply. The system can self-sustain for up to 8 hours. A nuclear, biological and chemical pathogen proof air-conditioned shelter is provided for the personnel as well as electronics.

The Indian army has a large requirement for ground radar. It has sought bids for 66 Air Defence Fire Control Radars (ADFCRs) to begin the process of replacing as many as 450 older radars in its inventory.

L&T is India's leading company in the private sector for the supply of defence equipments and systems. It has been involved in the development of defense systems for over 20 years. Its current product range, built largely through in-house research & development, includes an array of marine engineering systems, electrical and control systems, naval weapon launch systems with fire control, C4I and missile systems, etc.

The Swedish defense company SAAB and Indian company Tata Power Strategic Engineering Division (Tata Power SED) have started the process of manufacturing Self-Protection Systems for Land-based Platforms, for the Indian market and for export to SAAB’s global market.

According to the company’s’ announcement, the partnership will also involve joint development of the next generation Self-Protection System. ‘The process of Transfer of Technology for production of initial orders for SAAB’s global customers has already commenced at Tata Power SED.’s facility in Bangalore.’ Saab announced, Tata Power SED will eventually manufacture a large part of the system in India and also do final assembly. Tata will also be responsible for marketing the system in India.

At Defexpo 2016 Tata displayed a model of T-90 fitted with LEDS 150 active protection system, comprising radar sensors and traversable countermeasure dispensers designed to protect the tank from anti-tank missiles and RPGs.

http://defense-update.com/20160330_leds_india.html

until now, LEDS has been manufactured by Saab's South African subsidiary Saab Grintek Defence, with the new deal marking the first time the system will be produced not only in India but anywhere outside of South Africa. The Indian LEDS 50 units will initially be manufactured at Tata Power SED's eleven-acre manufacturing facility in Bangalore.

The Izumo is 248 m long and displaces 27,000 tons carrier-destoyer. The Izumo is equipped with AESA radar, Phalanx and SeaRam CIWS, bow mounted sonar and anti-torpedo countermeasures. Its main offensive weapon is its large aviation complement of transport and attack helicopters. The official figures state that ‘14 helicopters’ is its maximum capacity, but these have been vastly downplayed for political purposes and its actual capacity is around 30 helicopters.
