198 birds were flying. Half of them is 99 plus the lone bird to make them 100 birds. |

ugonna1054: Atleast the question didn't say the one bird they met was flying. That one bird might have been standing on a cable or rooftop, but it is expressly stated that others were flying. |

The birds said that they need half of them plus the one bird that said hello to them. Therefore in mathematical terms we have: The number of the group of birds as X, Half of the group of birds as X/2, Then the lonely bird that said hello to the group is 1 So the total should be 100 X + X/2 + 1 = 100 collect like terms, X + X/2 = 100 - 1 3X/2 = 99 3X = 2 * 99 3X = 198 X = 198 ÷3 X = 66 So we have the total number of birds in the group as 66, and a lonely bird which is 1 Then the number of birds flying is 66 + 1 = 67. |
