next time please tell us if Vista or XP. ok, is it slow when botting up and have recently installed any sw such as limewire

I take you havent got norton on this machine, have you ? if you have let us know as[b] norton has got some known issues[/b] which can be make the block internet connections, system instability etc. as a end user i wouldnt recommend norton. right back to track. before we do this please make sure your l[b]aptop is plug into the mains and running[/b]. This test will take 20 to 1 hour depending on Hard drive size etc. Please do the followings

Turn off back on again

F10 repeatedly(Bios seutp utility)

go to Diagnostic at the top by using your arrow key

Primary hard drive self test press enter and wait for the result

If the test pass which am hoping then this problem will down to software related

If the test failed am afriad your hard drive need replacing
