Good day Nairalanders,

I am on a mission to take away harmful artificial seasoning from our kitchen by replacing them with beneficial spices and herbs.

Why not the usual bouillon cubes? Our mothers used them, they bring out great taste and they seem to make ordinary meals into enjoyable concoctions right? Well for the sake of arguments and I am to agree with these, how about the health implications of consuming MSG (Monosodium glumate)? MSG is an additive that enhances flavours, they are often found in pre packaged processed food e.g. canned food, Crackers, Salad dressing, and frozen dinners, even baby food.

MSG like many artificial additives is slow poison, they have no nutritional value, and if all the benefit in staying away is just to be on the safe side, then it’s better to stay with the natural flavour enhancer!

What are spices and herbs?
To keep it short, spices and herbs are from natural plants, spices are from fruits of certain plants, while herbs are from the roots, barks and leaves. Examples of spices are; black pepper, cardamon pods, cumin, cloves, fennel, Coriander, white pepper, etc. while herbs are: sage, thyme, rosemary, curry leaves, efinrin, basil etc.

The usual kitchen things we do not give much regards to as spices or herbs, are peppers (chili, cayenne), salt, locust beans (iru), ogiri, crayfish, and several dry fish (agbodo, shawa etc.), onion, garlic, ginger etc.
Salt is the most important spice. Without salt our meals will come out bland. There are different types of salt. The common kitchen table salt is not necessarily the best choice. It contains anti caking properties which are also an artificial additives. One of the best natural salt to use is sea salt.
