This might have happened due to long years of taking crude oil and gas from oil and gas bearing aquifers. The denudation emanating from natural fault lines and anthropogenic activities of building more structures on empty aquifers might put more pressure on the carrying capacity of the earth crust in affected areas and the need for aggregation and structural re-profiling towards stability of empty reserves will amount to shaking, treamor or quake at the surface down the soil structure. We consume oil and gas now, people should be ready to pay later. NDAs are not aware about the magnitude of force and energy that bombing sends through a delicate eco-system in the Niger Delta. Empty oil wells should as a matter of urgency be filled with water to avoid cataclysm. Let us go green, go solar. Thanks.

This is very possible in that parts of Nigeria where oil is being produced, because as an earth scientist I learnt that earthquake is as a result of released stress that is stored in rocks which creates displacement that occurs in rocks along fault planes, whereas hydrocarbons are being preserved within what we called the trap system, and fault that causes earthquake is an example of a structural trap in oil-rich Zone like the Niger Delta, Displacement is high because oil extracted has left a huge vacuum in the earth interior lithology boundaries which will find a way to close the open space thereby results to earthquake. So I think it's high time Nigeria shift her total focus on oil in order to guide against unavoidable disaster like this .

Niger Delta is seriously suffering from environmental problems as a result of oil exploration being carried out in the area but an hausa or yoruba man who is not affected in anyway will be agitating for evenly distribution of proceeds from oil sales. Who is that foolish now?

he world is on track for its hottest year on record and levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere have reached new highs, further fuelling global warming, the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) has said.

June marked the 14th consecutive month of record heat for land and oceans, the United Nations agency said on Thursday. It called for the speedy implementation of a pact reached last December to limit climate change by shifting from fossil fuels to green energy by 2100.

The average temperature in the first six months of 2016 was 1.3C warmer than the pre-industrial era in the late 19th century, according to Nasa.

“This underlines more starkly than ever the need to approve and implement the Paris climate change agreement, and to speed up the shift to low carbon economies and renewable energy,” said the WMO secretary general, Petteri Taalas.

Under December’s Paris agreement, nearly 200 governments agreed to limit global warming to “well below” 2C above pre-industrial times, while “pursuing efforts” for a ceiling of just 1.5C. Temperatures are already nudging towards that lower limit.

“The heat has been especially pronounced in the Arctic, resulting in a very early onset of the annual melting of the Greenland ice sheet and Arctic sea ice,” the WMO said.

David Carlson, director of the WMO’s climate research programme, told a news briefing: “What we’ve seen for the first six months of 2016 is really quite alarming. We would have thought it would take several years to warm up like this. We don’t have as much time as we thought.”


The northern hemisphere, including the state of Alaska in the US, Canada and Russia, has posted unusually warm temperatures, he said.

The last month in which global temperatures were below the 20th-century average was December 1984.

A strong El Niño weather event in the Pacific Ocean, a phenomenon associated with extreme droughts, storms and floods, “has now disappeared”, the WMO said in a statement.

The El Niño event developed in 2015 and contributed to the record temperatures in the first half of 2016 before disappearing in May, the WMO said.

Taalas said: “Climate change, caused by heat-trapping greenhouse gases, will not [disappear]. This means we face more heat waves, more extreme rainfall and potential for higher impact tropical cyclones.”

Some guys from O.A.U or so recently made predictions of possible earthquake in Nigeria.. Too bad we don't have contingency routes if such eventually happens.

Tremor in Oyo State, after which the Ogun river dries up, Tremor in bayelsa and rivers state........ Yet our leaders wouldn't think it worthwhile to employ the young Geology graduates the country is producing every year.
Geology graduates have turned to be entrepreneurs in society and not practising their discipline.
I suggest a research Institute be started with our geologists studying the environmental changes in Nigeria.
I'm not preaching doom, but all these events definitely are a sign of things to come.
