There was no Ghana and Nigeria. The nations were the tribes. Some were ruled by Kings, others by a council of elders that every male member grew up to be part of. They rose to power according to their age groups.

The related tribes and tribes that had pacts traded and interacted in other areas just fine. Specification of economic activities helped too. There were farmers could trade with the herders in things their communities needed from the others.

There were alot of wars between several nations too. Some places in Africa are still like that, like in the Northern Kenya and Southern Ethiopia. The tribes there practice alot of cattle raiding and one tribe is always attacking another. With the introduction of the guns, there are many casualties of the raiding which happen like wars. The place is largely still untouched by western civilization.

That's why Africa is very tribal. And all modern African wars have a tribal angle. People are more loyal to their tribes than to the countries, which were demarcated by European colonial powers.
