Sunderland have moved quickly to appoint former Everton and Manchester United manager David Moyes as Sam Allardycee's successor on Friday. Though the exit of Allardycee was met with anguish and sadness, the appointment of the Scot has suddenly lifted spirits at the club given he is an upgrade on the current England manager.

"Moyes was my number one managerial target for the last five appointments, but his desire to honour existing contracts meant we were not able to bring him to Sunderland previously. To be able to finally welcome him as our new manager is fantastic news for the club," Sunderland Chairman Ellis Short said after appointing Moyes on Saturday.

While no one is disputing the fact that the Scot is the right man for Sunderland, Moyes has so much work to do in Sunderland considering the struggles of the North East club for the past 16 months which has see them sack the likes of Paolo Di Canio Gus Poyet, Dick Advocaat before the appointment of Sam Allardycee to manage the Three Lions on Friday. Sunderland have only finished in the Premier League top half thrice (Under Peter Reid in 2000 and 2001 and Steve Bruce in 2011) for the past 60 years. The appointment of Moyes shows that Premier League survival is the main objective of Sunderland considering Moyes' impressive exploits with Everton (though he failed in a top club like a Manchester United) and also given Sunderland have escaped relegation on the last day in the last two seasons under the likes of Dick Advocaat and Sam Allardycee.

It is not the first time that Moyes has been linked with Sunderland as he was Ellis Short's (Sunderland's Chairman) favourite to replace Dick Advocaat after he announced his retirement at the end of the 2014/2015 season. Moyes rejected the offer due to his loyalty to Real Sociedad's President (Jokin Aperribay) as he had promised him he will take over at the Bilbao club at that time. Short made another move for the manager in October 2015, and again Moyes turned it down opting to continue in Real Sociedad which was not to be as he was soon sacked by the Spanish club.

The good news for Sunderland fans is that both the club and Moyes share the same vision and on objective (to reassert their Premier League status) after underachieving for a long while. Moyes returns to the Premier League with Sunderland after seeing his stock fall after failing in both Old Trafford and San Sebastián and after overachieving with limited resources at Everton where he achieved a top four finish in 2005.

The 53-year-old appeared a shocking appointment in Old Trafford to succeed legendary Alex Ferguson in 2013 but his failing is entirely not his fault as the intense pressure and media spotlight, lack of transfer signings (Maroune Felliani his only signing), and difference in playing style all contributed to his fall. Before taking over at Everton, the Merseyside club flirted with relegation several times under Walter Smith, but once the former Preston North End manager took over in 2002 he changed the team even axing Three Lions great Paul Gascoigne and turning the club to a regular Premier League title contender in his 11 years at the club finishing sixth, fourth, seventh, eight, fifth on several occasions. Unlike In Manchester United and Real Sociedad, Moyes will be given the time, financial resources and support to turn Sunderland into a Premier League force. Moyes is also one who can work on a limited budget turning bargain signings like Tim Cahill, Phil Jagielka, Leighton Baines, Joleon Lescott and Seamus Coleman into Premier League bests during his time at the club.

For now , Sunderland Chairman (Ellis Short) should provide the coach with funds as Sunderland need a total overhaul given their struggles in the past and the fact that they are yet to make any signing in this transfer window.
