A six-year-old girl was forced to marry a 55-year-old man after her father allegedly sold her in exchange for a goat in Firozkoh, Ghor province of Afghanistan. Seyed Abdolkarim, the buyer, and the girl's father have both been arrested after concerned relatives told local authorities about the horrid exchange.

The father, who also allegedly received rice, tea, sugar and cooking oil, said his family were desperate for food and by selling his daughter, he had one less mouth to feed.

The law in Afghanistan says girls cannot get married until they are 16 years old. The girl's father tried to justify the marriage by saying Abdolkarim promised not to have sex with her until she was 18.

According to reports by The Observers Abdolkarim took the girl to a relative's house in Firozkoh, Ghor province, where he told people she was his daughter. However alarms bells started ringing when the husband let slip to another relative that the girl was his wife. When her father was arrested, local women were seen on video hitting him as he was dragged away by police.

A local women's rights bureau in Ghor province ran checks on the girl and it is believed she did not have sex with the older man. The father has been stripped of parental rights while the girl now reportedly lives with her mother.
