French gymnast Samir Ait Said suffered a gruesome leg injury while vaulting during the 2016 Rio Olympics men’s team qualifications.

After doing two backward flips off the vault, the gymnast landed awkwardly on the ground. His left leg broke which made a sharp cracking noise heard throughout the venue. Said immediately grabbed his knee and saw that his lower left leg was flopping to the side unnaturally.

The gymnast was silent throughout the ordeal but was obviously in tremendous shock and pain. His teammates looked shocked after the injury and the spectators quickly looked away from the brutal scene.



According to his team leader, Said was a friendly competitor who gave everything he had to win a medal for his country.

"It is very difficult for the team. He was one of the friendliest on the team which is very difficult – he came to win a medal and gave everything 200 percent," team leader Corrine Moustard-Callon told the media.

The French gymnastics officials posted on social media that the injured gymnast suffered a fractured tibia and fibula. They also disclosed that Said who have to undergo a surgery as soon as possible.

According to the officials, Said wanted to express his gratitude for the fans for their great support and promised to join the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and win a gold medal.

Said also suffered a major injury in the past while vaulting. The gymnast missed the 2012 Olympics held in London after fracturing his right leg in three places during the European Championships. However, he was able to have a full recovery from the injury and participated in last year’s World Artistic Gymnastics Championships held in Glasgow.
