Lagos: Man loses ear for gossiping

For allegedly engaging in idle gossip, a Lagos-based man, Udo Edet has had his left ear bitten off by an angry neighbour.

The perpetrator of the heinous act, Essien Effiong, has, however, been caught by the law. He is to spend the next three years in jail after he was convicted by a Lagos Magistrate.

Udo Edet was said to have been rescued by anti-robbery policemen from Apapa division on routine patrol who were attracted to the scene by Edet’s desperate screams.

The policemen, who apparently thought that a robbery operation was on in the area, rushed to the scene only to meet Effiong raining blows on his victim, Edet. Edet’s left ear, which had just been bitten off, lay still on the ground.

Daily Sun gathered that trouble began when a young girl who was brought from the village by a food seller in the area suddenly eloped with Effiong.

Edet was accused by Effiong of reporting the girl’s whereabouts to the food seller.

Angered by Edet’s action, Effiong reportedly stormed Edet’s house with a resolve to deal an unforgettable blow on the ‘idle gossip.’ He reportedly seized Edet’s head and, with his teeth, chopped off his left ear before dealing several blows on his powerless victim.

The Apapa Magistrate Court 6 where Effiong was arraigned has since sentenced him to three years imprisonment without an option of fine.

Magistrate, Mr. B.A. Sonuga delivered judgment in the two-count charge preferred against Effiong.

The first was that Effiong committed assault by giving Edet blows with his fist all over his body, an offence punishable under section 331 of the criminal code cap 17 vol. 2 laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.

Count two stated that the accused person at number “13, Olofin Street, Apapa in the Apapa Magistrate District did grievously harm one Udo Edet ‘M’ of Marine Road, Apapa by cutting off his left ear with teeth and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 3351 of the criminal code cap 17 vol. 2 laws of Lagos State of Nigeria.”
