The creative industries in the US contribute over 11% of GDP , employing about 9% of the Tpopulation (over 30 million people). Include Mexico and Canada and it represents an average of 7% of GDP and creates work for about 41 million people across North America.

These are figures presented by Ojoma Ochai, assistant country director of the British Council in Nigeria, who provided her findings for the third annual African Creative Economy Conference which took place in Cape Town during October . She focused on Nollywood as an example of how creative industries can promote growth in Africa while providing employment opportunities and promoting talent. Ochai says the Nigerian movie industry generates about US$ 500m per year in revenue, making up 5% of the country's GDPand 11% of its non-oil exports. [Nigeria's GDP in 2012 was some $270 billion, meaning that, at $500 million, Nollywood represents 0.18% of GDP .
