On the issue of the man arrested by the Police for naming his dog Buhari in Ogun State after a complain by a Nigerien(Foreigner).

The man has every right to name his dog whatsoever name he likes.

The Complainant has every right to be angry that a dog was named after his father.

The accused has every right to paint the body of his dog with the name he gave it.

The complainant has every right to approach the accused and voice his anger at such action and ask him to desist. And his kinsmen have every right to join him in solidarity by being angry at the accused.

The complainant and his kinsmen have no right to plan or contemplate to attack the accused/or cause ethnic crisis if he fails to desist from him action.

The complainant has every right to report to the police the action of the accused rather than take laws into his hands.

The police do not have any right to arrest the accused like a common criminal.

Rather, they ought to invite both parties to hear their submission.

After investigation, and it was discovered the accused only has a malicious intent to slander or poke fun at the complainant but not an intent to breach public peace, they can advise the complainant to go to a civil court for redress if reconciliation fails. (Goodluck with him proving a slander case when even the Judge probably has a dog named Obama or Bush).

If it is discovered that the accused has an intent to breach public peace (which is vague and hard to prove as the accused can deny such intent), then the police ought to charge him to court within 24hrs rather than detain him with criminals for more than a week at State Hqtrs Eleweran.

Or the police should have simply act as a mediator and reconcile both parties rather than victimize one party.

This case is a real test for our laws of Freedom of Speech and Freedom after Speech.

Why are we even thinking the police would have done better, when we know their antecedents. Under-trained, underfunded, underequipped, undermanned, understaffed, underintelligent and undertakers.
