Documentation matters in every international business. Nigerians love to start importing goods either for personal or commercial purpose. It is very crucial to learn the most important documents needed for both air and sea freight. The importers must get ready those documents in order to avoid demurrage at Nigeria ports.

Form M - This is a document issue by CBN through commercial banks for import permit procedure. Which will states the product Harmonized Codes for customs import duty, the amount and other basic information. The importer or his agent can handle this.

Insurance Certificate - This is needed to cover any loss or damage during shipping of the goods to Nigeria. You can approach any reputable insurance company for issuance.

Agency Certificate - The type of certificate will depend goods are importing. For some manufactured goods; SONCAP will be issued by Standard Organization of Nigeria. For some Food items NAFDAC must issue import permit for goods.

Bill of Lading or AirWay Bill: This document is issued by shipping company that transport the goods from the ports of loading to Ports of Destination.

Commercial or Pro Forma Invoice: This monetary value declaration of goods. It always issued by the seller or the shipper of the goods.

Many importers are not aware of the importance of these documents. They always think they can handle it themselves. That is the reason importers need the assistance of freight forwarders even before they start shipping goods.
